How do you keep a dog from licking his stitches?

My 4&1/2 month old pit bull mix puppy is going to be neutered Tuesday. On the phone , the receptionist was telling me to make sure that he doesn't lick at his stitches. I will ask the vet for more detailed info when I get to the office. I was just curious , and thought I would ask here also. She also mentioned a scrotal-something or other that they would have on him.If anyone would like to share their stories about neutering, I would love to hear them, so that I can know what to expect. Thanks :)

When we had our little male neutered, the vet game him staples to hold his incision closed. We elected pain management for him to make sure he would be ok and to not have any pain associated with his surgery. We were instructed to watch him for any vomiting as a result of anesthesia - it shouldn't last for more than 12 hours and to contact them immediately if it did. He was sort of groggy when we picked him up from the anesthesia and he slept most of the rest of the evening. He ate and drank ok and he left his incision alone. If he hadn't, we would have had to ask the vet for an Elizabethan collar to keep him from licking.

We were also instructed to monitor his incision at least twice a day to check for excessive bleeding, drainage or swelling and to contact them if it did. We just had to try and keep him from being too active for 14 days - at that time we took him back to have his staples removed.

Our little made was just fine after being neutered and we'd have never known it. He had no problems and acted like he had no pain at all. He was back to his old self the very next day and he had no reactions or problems whatsoever.

Our little female was spayed and had internal stitches that had a bit of a reaction to - we took her in and the vet gave her an ointment we put on her twice a day. Other than that ... she was back to her old self the very next day.

All went well - they're both doing fine and act the same as they did before.

Good luck =}

The dog will have a cone that fits around it's neck to keep him from licking and basically having peripheral vision. If you decide to take that off (which is okay) when you hear or notice your pup licking, tell it no.

The vet has a spray you can put on the surgery sight that tastes horrible and will keep your dog from licking and biting at the stitches.

get him a cone for his head its actually called a e collar they sell them at petco and petsmart
