Should I THREATEN to leave my job if i don't get a RAISE?

Annual evaluations are coming up at my job and this year I'm REALLY ready to walk out the door if i dont get a raise. I'm just tired of working my *** off and not being acknowledged.

i 'm probably THE most knowledgeable, experienced and productive person in my dept., yet I make pretty much the SAME as everyone else ( i think). I like the company i currently work in but I KNOW ,with my qualifications, i can make more somewhere else.

So this year, I just want to be walk into my boss' office and tell him " Boss, either you give me a decent raise this year, or i'm out of here! i can make more money somewhere else. " I thought this might be the most EFFECTIVE way of getting a raise, because my boss is very stingy and is clueless as to how much harder and better I work than anyone else in my dept.

has anyone ever THREATENED to leave as a means to getting a raise at their job? HOW DID IT WORK OUT for you? please share with me YOUR experience and give some advice.

Don't threaten. If they get the impression that it's just you making noise and you won't follow through it won't help you.

But spell it out to them. Tell them what you would make elsewhere, show them job ads at the sort of levels you are qualified for which indicate a higher salary.

And if all else fails, walk.

Due to the state of the economy I do not recommend you storming into your bosses office and demanding a raise. Instead, provide an outline of the positive things that you have done for the company. State what you have done to affect their bottom line, increase revenue, etc. Take a look at your last evaluation and how you improved your work performance. State goals you would like to strive for in the upcoming year. During an evaluation focus your attention on the positives.

But I would also update your resume in the meantime. If you hadn't noticed, employers are looking for cheap labor to increase their profits to hopefully help the struggling economy.

Just weigh your words carefully and go into that meeting with an agenda and an outline of all the POSITIVE things you have done for the company.

I might say go for it!!

But right now the job market sucks. I did and that is what happens. If you give them that alternate then they may say thanks there is the door.

You burn bridges, they wouldn't give you a good reference.
Don't do that to yourself. Hang in there.

Probably not a good plan. Even if you don't need the money, you might need the reference for future employment. If you think you can make more money elsewhere, it's time to throw your hat into the arena. If you like your job, but not your compensation, then you can use another offer as leverage.

Perhaps you should try to negotiate for a raise. Most people never ask...
