Mono around child?

The college aged girl who watches my daugther for a few hours a day while I'm at work called me and told me that the doctor just diagnosed her with Mono. Her doctor said she isn't contagious and can continue to go to college and watch my daughter. I called the pediatrician's office and they said it is safe as long as they do not share food or drinks and as long as the babysitter washes her hands often.

My question is whether or not it really is safe. I am a very protective mother and do not want to risk a chance of my daughter getting mono. I know the doctor's said it is safe, but I wanted other opinions...especially people with experience with mono.

Since it is only for a few hours a day, it wouldn't be difficult for me at all to find another teen or relative to watch her. But I also know that the babysitter needs the money...

Any advice??

I had mono for weeks as a teen and didn't pass it to any family members or friends. I'd agree with the doctor and not worry about it. I'm sure she'll be that much more careful with the baby since she has mono.

I understand your doubts on having her watch your child...I would probably feel the same way if it were my child. Truth be told..your daughter would probably be fine because mono is passed through saliva. That being said those while mono are excessively tired...i don't know if i would want someone who could not keep up. My gut says no, but you can if you want.

I think you are probably safe. Mono isn't as contagious as a lot of other things. She just need to be careful with direct contact with bodily fluid. The truth is that your baby sitter has been carrying the germs around for a few days before her symptoms showed up.,
