Plan to move to Toronto next year .. need some advice?

So I live in Winnipeg and I really hate it... I am graduating with a 4 year B.Sc in microbio next year and planning to move to Toronto since I am absolutely in love with that city..(have relatives and friends there whom I visited a few times). I am planning to finish my degree at the UofT as a summer visiting student (2 courses) ... I plan to stay at Campus Co-op residence for the summer but if that doesnt work out I need advice on how to find accomodation (inexpensive... i dont mind to share an apprt with roomates). What is the best area and what is the best way to look? especially since I am here and not there.Another question is about employment: What are the employment prospects.. I dont mind working at a job that is not related to my field.. at least at the beginning .. like an entry level office job or something.. (not retail or call center - those are brutal) Do you think I can get a decent job with my degree there?
What income should I have in order to survive TO as a student

Craigslist (toronto.craigslist.org) tends to be the place to look for cheap housing. Best areas (in my opinion anyhow) are Little Italy, Queen St. West, the Annex, and Danforth.

Huge selection of jobs, at the very worst with that degree you could get some gig where you run the same tests over and over in a lab someplace.

You can survive in Toronto (especially with a roommate) on $1000/month but $1500 is cozier.

There is a high demand for jobs in Toronto- I wouldnt worry

I LOVED living in Toronto!!! It is so clean, pretty, civilized, with fantastic restaurants, art - things to do, and awesomely nice and beautiful looking human beings!

Canadians are the nicest people in the world.

You can run into movie actors downtown constantly too, as so much filming is done there -

It's EXPENSIVE - check out your school's job board; and contact the Chamber of Commerce. NETWORK NETWORK NETWORK -

the link is regarding neighborhoods; as with anywhere, if you can talk to other students/teachers you may get some tips that won't lead to unwanted surprises.

Good luck!!

yeah, toronto is a great place in many ways. it isn't cheap though. you can normally get a cheap place to rent if you are willing to share. i guess the downtown area around the campus is the easiest, although not cheap really. have fun!

It might take some effort to like Toronto. It's obviously different from Winnipeg, but that doesn't mean you'll like it better.

You might just love Toronto as a place to visit, as a place to think of moving to, but then when you're actually here...

I do definitely applaud your idea of moving somewhere you feel attracted to. Just keep the vibe going.

You can find accomodation through the U. of T. or any other local university or college. They usually have some sort of site dedicated to finding accomodation for students, and you don't always need to be a student to use those services. You can also check the newspaper classified that are online (Toronto Star, Toronto Sun).

Best area? It depends what you like. It's all good. Just avoid Regent's Park, St. Jamestown, Parkdale (but Parkdale has it's good parts too).

There are lots of jobs in Toronto.

Dont move to Toronto. Very rude, closed minded individuals there. If you want to move somewhere move to Montreal in the English "Westmount" sector. Now thats a great city with alot of history and always have something to do. You dont have to be french in Westmount.
