Office politics question?

The head of the organization has a policy that says each month we do X activity.

My boss says WE do not have to do X each month because HIS boss
said so. HIS boss is one level under the head of the workplace.

I work in an extra duty with a person on the same level with my boss.

His job is to implement the X program.

He had thought my boss single-handedly decided on his own
not to do X.

However, I heard my boss say HIS boss is the one who said it was okay just to ignore this policy X.

So, I emailed the man that I work with and said, hey, you know how we do not do X. Well, it is because my boss's boss told him he did not need to follow that rule.

Is it best just to know that information about how we started ignoring the other guy's program and rules but not to say anything next time?

Am I interjecting myself too much to share with the other guy whose program it is, who it was that instructed my boss to just ignore his program?

Thanks, my boss thinks the other guy is an idiot. Also, it is my job in my additional role to help the guy implement program X.

FOLLOW THE CHAIN OF COMMAND...If your Boss tells you it is not necessary, then don't worry about it. Not your problem. Sometimes too much worrying can be too involving. Just do what your Boss says and let him or her handle the heat. If it don't stink...don't stir it. Let sleeping dogs lie, so to speak. Leave well enough alone or you may find yourself in a heap of trouble. Speaking from past experiences. Might be best if your have your boss send you an email regarding not doing what you know needs to be done or an office memo. That way you have a paper trail in case the blame gets forwarded to you.
