How do you think Romney's religion will affect him in office?

No offense to Mormons but I think that religion is a little nutty. Its true that most religions have their share of nut jobs, but when you have an entire religion based on the idea that some shmoe in Utah that looked into a hat and read off what god was saying, you wonder about the intelligence of the followers of such a religion.

Don't get me wrong, I really like Romney, and he'd probably be one of my top choices for president, but Mormons make me a little nervous. Any thoughts?

Again, I'm not saying Mormons are that much more nutty than those in other religions, but their beliefs are way more outrageous than most I've studied. I also know plenty about Mormonism. I was being a little sarcastic about my analysis of what Mormonism is all about, but really some of the beliefs just make me want to hit my head against the wall and just wonder how people can possibly believe in that kind of stuff. You can believe in whatever you want, but I think i'm justified in being a little careful about the potential next president of the United States.

Why not compare how he is running his campaign compared to someone like, say....Mike Huckabee? I think the fact that Mike has brought his religion into his campaign is a stronger indicator how he would govern as President. The Huck is a scary man, especially since he calls for changing the Constitution to meet "God's standard", and signs autographs on his supporters' Bibles? Huckabee also has claimed that Christians should take this nation back for Christ. It' clear Huck would try to impose his religion on everyone else.

Considering he's preached anti-Mormon and anti-Catholic bigotry in the past, that should make Americans very nervous. But THANKFULLY, people have woken up and his campaign is in trouble. Mitt Romney, on the other hand, has not done such evil-speaking of others like Huckabee.

Romney does not bring his religion into the campaign, and he did not do so in Massachusetts as governor.

BTW, I think your understanding of Mormonism is completely shallow and off-based. If you read in-depth into its history -- FROM A RELIABLE SOURCE--- you would learn that Joseph Smith was not just some "shmoe in Utah". He was just a 14 year old boy who claimed to have a vision of God and Jesus Christ. He translated the Book of Mormon which was engraved on plates of gold. He was tarred and feathered and was endlessly persecuted by other so-called Christians, and mobs, yet never denied his testimony. He and wife Emma lost several children due to the persecution. He endured far too much and no person could have endured unless they knew that what they were doing was what God commanded.

He also NEVER made it to Utah. He never stepped foot in Utah. He was murdered by a mobbed while being confined at a jail in Carthage, IL.

I am not saying that you have to agree with Mormonism, but should have a fundamental understanding of its history before criticizing it and called its followers "nutty". Just how many non-Christians of the world look at Christians as 'nutty' by the way some of them act or believing things such as the parting of the Red Sea, Jonah surviving being in the belly of a whale, or (gasp!) Jesus Christ resurrecting from the DEAD??!!!

Please learn some tolerance and learn to be a little more respectible to those of different faiths. Mitt will make an excellent POTUS.

Lou: there is no such thing as the government of Africa - its a friggin continent

He has presidential hair.

His religion didn't hold him back any in Massachusetts, when he was governor, I doubt it'll hurt him now.

Obama's Church really believes only in Africa. That is troubling to me since the African Government is in shambles and the people are busy killing one another.

The Mormons have their roots here and believe in love and peace and helping one another.

The only people who ever worry about Religion are those who want to destroy religion. Neither Romney or anyone else will put their religion before nation.

His religion didn't affect his job as governor in Mass, so there is no reason to think that it will make a difference as president.

If the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints make you nervous it is probably because you dont have accurate information. To find out about the church go here:

Members serve missions to teach people about the church but especially to teach them about Jesus Christ. In the Bible Jesus gives the great commission: Matt 28:16-20

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, [even] unto the end of the world. Amen.

That is why members of the LDS church serve missions. I don't understand why that bothers you.

Religion won't affect him in office because he won't be in office. Romney has retired from office and is just finding a way to burn off some excess cash--his and those who support him.

Let's hope we never find out. Mormons believe they will become gods of their own planets after they die. They used to believe in polygamy until the government outlawed it. However, they still believe in polygamy, because once they are a god, they will have many wives, and make spirit babies to populate their planet. They believe some scary stuff...

I don't think it will be an issue. And, like the guy above me said, Joseph Smith never made it farther west than Illinois and that translation of the Book of Mormon you are talking about took place in New York. I can understand how people have issues believing all the Mormon doctrine as some of it is pretty "far out" for lack of a better term. However, Mormon's are Christian and do share a lot of common beliefs with other Christians, and Christianity in general is quite "far out" if you really think about it, and about any religion for that matter. Funny how people find it so much easier to believe the "wacky" things that happened in the Bible because they happened so long ago. If those same things happened 100 years ago, no one would believe it. Also, Christ was largely unaccepted in his time and thought to be blasphemous and crazy, so think about that! There are a lot of proven leaders in America whether it be business, government, etc who are Mormon and don't let their religion get in the way....it gives them a foundation of values more than anything.
