Why do my shared documents open "Read Only" on other computers on the network?

We are using Windows XP with Office 2003. I have several documents that are shared on the network, but when the girls up front open the documents, whether I am in them or not they open as read only. I have looked every where I can and have authorized others to make changes to shared documents, but it does not work. Any suggestions????

Please read entire question before answering.

Natelinds-Nobody has the document open. I am the first person in every morning and when I try to open it at the front desk it opens ready only, even though it is not open on any of the other 3 computers.

AAA-I already unchecked that box.

It could be that you've shared the folder with only READ capabilities. You must share the folder as read-write if you want others to open and change the files.

That means another computer has that same document open on there desk top. thats what happens to us;

go to options, right click the file and uncheck read only lol xp

Try saving them to your own folder.

are you authorized to give rights to others? we had that problem an dno matter what rights I gave, it meant nothing until the system admin gave the rights.

it does make a difference. ask your systems admin to share the file. this way it will be available to the whole network, or just the users you choose. <give him/her a list of the other users>

hope this helps

When you share the document or folder there is a button that lets you change the default access permissions.

so that if somebody else wants to read it, they can't change anything and save it. It basically makes sure all your hard work isn't deleted by some jerk.

This might be a stupid suggestion, but im not computer whizz, couldn't you just get a memory stick and use that? It also backs up all your work.

someone else on your network either has it open or your not the system admin.

If a document is opened by more then one user, the other user can open as read only, and the first person who opened that document has the authority. Only one person can edit (the first person who opens the file)..

They can try copy it in a new office project
This may help
If not try get Office 07, It solves this problem by detailed saving where u easily can change some delicate option in the saved file

in the file sharing options box, there are setting that you can check/uncheck that allows others to edit files or only view them-

this is NOT on the file itself, it is in the settings for the file sharing section

You probably have to give them th eoption to be able to edit the file, if it is a read only that means they can access the info, but they can not change it.

if your using NTFS you need to check sharing permissions on the share tab AND ntfs permissions under the security tab. make sure the everyone group has read / write or full control even
