I have a co-worker that falls asleep at work everyday at work.?

How should I deal with this? It bothers me because I feel it's unethical to sleep at work - she's getting paid to sleep! She is a recent college grad and goes out drinking everynight and comes to work hungover! I go out too but I don't bring it work with me and let it effect my work ethic. It's really annoying, and distracting. I have asked the co-worker if she is not feeling well but she just says that she hate a late night and was out drinking. I have mentioned this to my boss and she just ended up giving her more work hours. Others have seen her sleeping as well. This situation in wearing on my morale; I share an office with her. What do you think? Should I go to HR?

We all do things at work that we're technically not supposed to do. However, sleeping at work is pretty much one of the worst things you can do. If your boss doesn't do anything about it and it's common knowledge that this girl does it and clearly gets away with it the only course of action that you really have is to go to HR. Be careful though, you may be opening up a can of worms that you don't want. If you go to HR you could get your boss in trouble b/c he/she clearly isn't on top of their job. If your boss gets in trouble for that, it could be traced back to you. Even though things of this nature are supposed to be kept confidential, your boss already knows you have a problem with this coworker and her work habits. He/She could put 2 and 2 together and come up with the conclusion that you were the one to go to HR about it.

Also, you don't necessarily know how your boss is truly handling the situation. Your coworker could have been written up. You may not think anything is being done about the problem, but your boss may be handling it.

I would just sit back and let the coworker do their own thing. They will get in trouble, it's just not your job to get her in trouble.

True it's not fair if you're doing all the work and she's just sleeping. If the boss doesn't care, then I guess you shouldn't care too much either.

Take a picture of her with your camera phone, and email it to HR. Go above her boss's head if it really bothers you. Send the picture every day that she does it. Eventually they will get the idea that she's not there to work.

Wow. That first poster gave some great advice. What a retard. You're getting cheated when you could have a coworker that slacks like that. Get her butt canned and get someone who's willing to earn their paycheck.

If you are doing her work then yes, you should make HR aware, but in writing - if it's not in paper it does not exist. If you are not picking up the extra work then mind your own business- HR is aware and believe me she will not be there too long.

um...people get fired for that.

The boss or office manager should be made aware of this if he/she is not already. We are all hired to do a job and be productive, if we are not then we are not living up to the contract to put in a good days work for a day's pay. It's ok to take naps during the day at work, but on your own time like at break or lunch, not while you're on the clock.

of course u should go to HR~ thats ridiculous that shes sleeping. why shoudl someone get paid to not do their job. def tell them how its unprofessional and u have spoken to them but they continue to do it.

I used to do that everyday! Oh wait, that was when I was in high school and I wasn't getting paid for it.
This girl needs to grow up and realize that she now has a job and responsibilities. I suggest sending an anonymous letter to the boss about her. That way he/she can keep a close eye on Sleeping Beauty. Maybe after a few warnings, or even getting fired, she'll think twice about staying up on a school-- I mean-- work night. Also, maybe you could talk obnoxiously loud on the phone. Turn the volume on the radio up. Continuously click your pen. "Accidentally" drop something heavy on her desk. Anything and everything you can think of that would drive her nuts and keep her awake. That too ought to teach her a lesson.

Plan to talk to a HR representative, and talk one more time to your Boss, but not about the problem, but about the action you are going to take to HR.... you will see how fast she acts now........
IF, not a fair action is taken, then make an appointment to HR, and talk about the incident, tell them how this is affecting your work performance on every day basis... you are there to do a job and you get paid and are very responsible on taking your responsibilities serious for the company, and honestly to see that an employee is doing the sleeping while others work, tell them you can not see why this is permitted, perhaps, you can apply to her job and you can take your naps too,.....right? it seems, OK! so, why not?
I am sure, they will do something, BUT!!!! if nothing happens (that I doubt it, after what you told them...) Then you start taking naps, yes!!! like you heard!! or just sit and relax while your friend sleeps, YOU will see how FAST action will be taken!! try it...it works!!
And if your friend, doesn't talk to you anymore, oh, well....and this is your problem? she knows you mean bitchy business, and she will change her habits, cause she knows you now, people don't bullshit with you..............

A bigger concern is why is your boss inept?
Yeah, it is not fair, that someone sleeps, but it will catch up with her. I would mention it to your boss one more time in a professional manner and wait to see what happens, may even want to mention that it is creating morale issues. If it continues go to HR, that is what HR is for. They should come down on your boss also if she fails to react the second time, so be tactful.
Other than that, if it is just a morale issue and you are not doing extra work on her behalf try to ignore it until action takes place.

The key word here is co-worker. Since the boss is aware of the behavior, it is really out of your hands. Let it go. She'll bury herself soon enough. Don't let her take you down with her.

Do whatever it takes to keep her awake. Keep the blinds open all the way, play music, talk to her, make lots of phone calls, watch news clips on your computer.

She'll quickly learn that the office is not a quiet place where she can dose off.

If she passes out anyway, take a picture of her asleep and send it to your boss.

Get out your cell phone girl and take a picture. Get HR's e-mail and sent it to her with a note that your boss is aware of the situation and exactly what does one have to do to get fired. Do it. This is bullsh*t.

don't hate the player, hate the game! she's young and wants to get her drink on, what's wrong with that?

eventually she'll be found out by the right people. until then, maybe put in for a change of offices.
