Small office, one passive aggressive co-worker,how do we deal with this?

The bet of the day is to see what mood she's in when she comes in, then during the day, figure out who she's mad at, what she says behind other people's back. The boss is no help whatsoever, refuses to confront the little emotional snot. I vote for friendly attempt at confrontation as the other three in the office have ALL shared what she's said re: the others. It has made for a tension filled situation. Any good ideas or should we all just ignore her slamming things around, ignoring us when we say good morning, and the eternal whispered hissing when she talks to somebody. Help!

If your office-mates are on board, why not all take the pledge to refuse to listen to her talking about the others. So if she comes to you and starts to complain about Jane, you say, "I really thing you should be dealing with Jane about this." When she is engaging in behaviours like slamming things around, or refusing to say hello, you should absolutely ignore it. Again, this will work best if you all agree to this. Passive aggressive individuals use this type of behaviour to try and engage others. She wants you to ask what's wrong or to try and cheer her up or whatever. If you ignore that behaviour, you won't get caught up with it. I would also suggest taking her absolutely at face value. So, if you and Jane are going to lunch and you invite her and she says, "I would, but I don't think Jane likes me," she is trying to get you to say something like, "oh that's silly, of course Jane likes you." Instead, just say, "okay, maybe some other time." The key is not to feed into the behaviour. And what's with the boss? Oh well, I guess that's another question. Good luck.
