Why did he ask that?

I just a met a new office colleague, named John. John and I are sharing the same office room. Today, my supervisor Bob
said to me in Bob's office, "Are you getting along with John. Now that you and John are sharing the same office room. John seems like a nice guy?"

Was my supervisor suggesting that I don't get a long with John.
John is a black male.
My supervisor never asked me that about Dave. Dave is leaving. Dave is a white male. John is replacing Dave.

I like John. He is nice.

What do you think my supervisor asked me that?

He told ME anyway it was because he wanted to have a three way with you and John, so he was hoping you really, you know, like John. Do you, like, John? Know what I'm sayin', know what I'm sayin'?

i think he asked u that to see if u are getting along as in is it a good fit for you two to share offices. i think he wants to make sure john is adjusting well to his new office. i dont think its a race thing.

Maybe Dave didn't get along with you, but was polite to your face and only mentioned it to your supervisor upon leaving.
Now Bob wants to make sure you don't repeat the same problem with John.

Did Bob hire both John and Dave? Maybe he's unsure of his hiring skills, and he wants some feedback/validation of his choice.

Of course, the question *could* be racially motivated, but there's nothing to conclusively prove that it *is*.

yeah im with bonger on this one...your boss is a little freaky.

i would say he didn't mean anything by it...unless he has had other instances where he may have come across as racist

i think he was just making sure that John felt comfortable in his new work palce. being the "new guy" can be stressfull at first. i am sure he was just making sure that John felt comfortable.

i dont think race had anything to do with it.

don't stress too much over it.

I think you are reading too much into it. Anytime you get someone new in the office, it's completely normal for the boss to want to make sure everyone is getting along okay. He may also want some reassurance from you that the new person is working and not just screwing around all day being lazy.

Holy cow, you are overanalyzing this!

Your boss is just trying to get a feel for John's personality and work habits.

By asking, he gives you the opportunity to politely point things out, good or bad, such as "We come up with some great ideas together," or "It seems like he's on the phone an awful lot, and that can be distracting."

You havea good boss for asking.

There is no arm done ! Your supervisor was only making sure that you were comfortable with your new colleague, why would you even mention skin colour ? Is long that you are comfortable and you both are doing your jobs is the only think that you and everyone else should be concerned.

If your boss ask you that it makes me wonder if you have shown some resentment in the past, If the answer is no ! then don't worry about it!

Is Bob black or white or undetermined? He could be subtly racist, assuming that he needs to keep an eye on black subordinates. He could be feeling you out for racism, making sure there's a good groundwork for your team rather than divisiveness. Is John the first person he's hired since he joined your team?
