Why does this laptop say Network Cable Unplugged?

1. This is an office laptop with no onboard wireless and no card. Its only used for LAN only.

2. I just reinstalled XP SP2 and all 80+updates a week ago. After the reinstall it connected to the network just fine. Then all of a sudden it says Network cable unplugged, firewalled. I operate on a second level and have no firewall installed on the machine. I restored it to the time I knew everything to work and still have the problem.

3. I've tried several connections that all have working internet from their switches and they all work on the other pc's but not this laptop.

4. It is assigned to the correct workgroup.

5. No domain. No server. Just a small office network with a shared University internet connection.

I'm a sys admin and think there may be something that I'm forgetting to check and its got me tongue in cheek. Any suggestions?

Ive also uninstalled and reinstalled the device and its driver....still no change

Sounds like it may have lost it's IP address.
Check that DHCP is enabled
Ensure windows firewall is Off
Run ipconfig /all, verify the IP, Gateway, DNS
Run ipconfig /release.
Run ipconfig /renew.

Good Luck

The most likely thing is that someone has moved it carelessly causing the cable to pull. This often breaks the connections from the connector to the card. This would make it think the cable was disconnected.
