Mapping a network drive over the internet...?

Hi all,

I need access over the internet to a USB drive connected to a computer in our main office. When I am at the office, I simply have the drive mapped as it is shared with the entire network. However, I am now working from a remote location with my laptop and require access to that drive. The computer is already being accessed remotely with GoToMyPC by another user who normally works in the main office, but is with me at the remote location.

So I opened up the router at the main office last night on ports 137, 138, 139 as well as 445 and used port forwarding to the computer with the shared USB drive. I was then able to access the drive by mapping to the IP address! However, the mapping does not work from the remote location. I do not have access to the router here, so I do not know if something is blocked.

Does anyone know an easy way to do this? Or do I have to open up the router at the remote location as well? How do I build a VPN to add security?

Thank you!

Im guessing your Local IT office will have to set you up to access anything remotely. Considering that you opened ports on the router (which is dangerous BTW) you must be an admin.

You need to have a RAS setup and be added as a user in order to dial in. I'm not to familiar with this, but the best I can offer up
