Why do folks continue to vote for a candidate outside of their own economic class?

How could a billionaire POSSIBLY have the same economic interests as you? It is guaranteed that he/ she will have a conflict of interest as soon as he/ she enters office. They will still be tied to the same corporations that they were tied to before they entered office. Directly or indirectly. Why not vote for a populist candidate that has shared your struggles of trying to make ends meet? Why vote for a trust fund baby? How could someone who has lived in a gated community their entire life or has never done their own grocery shopping possibly relate to you? Think about it.

You assume they are voting just for economic reasons. For instance a millionaire might have an insightful look/resources to stop pollution [i.e. Branson just pledged 3bill to fight global warming] and his view might coincide with the general middle class population. Economic interest make up a fraction of campaign slogans.
