How often do employers check internet monitoring tools?

I work for a 50 people company but I work in a side office 40 miles away...only 2 other people work in my office so I asked my boss if it was okay before I did it, but I wanted to check if an adult site was real because of its hillarious name. He didnt care and I did it right in front of him. Now im nervous about if its going to get to the main office. Its been 2 weeks and Im still nervous everyday at work. The computer is shared so my name is not tied to it, im still really paranoid...would the company have noticed by now? should I still be worried... also I was only on the site for 10 secs...

no way to tell when or if your IT dept really checks
ive been doin this for a long time and the only time i bother with checking usage is when i get a complaint
i.e., an employee says they saw someone else on rotten.com and they are offended by it
if i dont hear about it, and your not poppin viruses, i dont care

if you havent heard anything by now, dont worry, if you get talked to say you hit the wrong button and it took you to a link, your sorry for surfing but you thought the site you were looking at was an ok site and you didnt think they would link to an adult site blehblehbleh

its easy to cover your tracks and explain what happened, just dont do it often

not only could you be fired, but your boss most likely would be too.
You wont know how often the IT people check records...it could be once a day....it could be twice a year....whatever.

Considering your boss said it was okay, your fine, stop worrying. And worst comes to worst you can always say it was a pop up that came up. Usually companys use software to prohibit sites so i doubt their monitoring it or it would have blocked it. Some company's just say it to scare employees, but like i said, worst to worst, it was a pop up.

I doubt your company is large enough to have purchased equipment capable of tracking your visit to that site. Especially considering you were actually able to get to the site. The first step network admins usually implement is a web blocker so if you do not find any blocked sites (very obvious, usually say "blocked by CompanyName Web Blocker"), you're probably fine. If you want to see if you have a web blocker, go to myspace.com that is always blocked by web blockers. If you can get to myspace, take a deep breath, your network admin does not have to tools to see you surfing.

Andrew,

I work in IT. Oddly part of my job is network security, and watching the surfing logs of the sites. You company likely does not have web monitoring tools, because if they did the porn site would have been blocked. If they have tools, and you still seen the site then they are poorly designed.

Tools like WebSense filter Internet surfing on corp networks. So if they were watching it would have stopped the site.
You did it in front of the boss too, so that offers another layer of coverage.

However, I can tell you this. If I noticed that you went to a porn site, it was a one time shot, and your other surfing logs don't show porn and after two weeks there is no other porn sites, Im likely to leave you alone about it and never mention it. I'm willing to bet as an IT person so are the techs in your company. HTH

Stop worrying. Get on with your life and work.

Employers will probably check often. I have read in newspapers where employees ask recruiters questions. They can even check peoples emails if connected to a network or know what emails you use. A network Administrator (a smart person who runs and controls the network) can see everything. I went to college to learn web or internet related things to become a webmaster. Believe me- people will know. You say your boss didn't care what you saw. I say bull. He was acting that way to make you happy. How do you know he didn't report you. You say your computer is shared. In the real world each user has their own login-password etc. to make them unique and noone else can access files, programs, etc. The best you can do if not too late is to go to your browser (IE, Firefox, Aol, or other) and go to the "history" tab. delete all. delete cookies. If visiting this site comes up in your work place up and creates problems I would say "someone found it because my computer is shared and my boss-what's his name decided it wasn't a good place to be so we went back to work."
