Conversation topics to share with the boss? |
HELP! I just got this new job in a lawyer's office. My boss (a lawyer) wants to take me to lunch to welcome me "officially" into the company. I am very good as an assistant, but I'm no law student, and I have no clue what on Earth to talk about with him. Definitely NOT about the office, as we're both buried there all day long. Anyone in the law field or with otherwise good conversation topic ideas to share with a *lawyer,* of all things?! Thanks for the help. Just be yourself, relax...and by the way, lawyers usually talk enough for two people anyway. LOL life in general...... weather, sports hobbies........... explore his hobbies...golf? athletics? Ask about how hes able to keep a family life with being so busy. He into charities? kick that around. you must start out wiht the question game, find somehitng u both like in common...MUSIC? golf? weather? any good books? any movies? and also let the boss do most of the talking. but hit a dead scielence make that topic into a question for a point of view. and good luck to yea. maybe you should start out asking about the company- what you will be doing, objectives, what the company is working towards etc. Hehe, I've worked for lawyers for the past 3 years. Just have any normal conversation. If there is one thing about lawyers, its that they like to drink after work alot, so talk about jack daniels or what not. You have to know something that interests him, if you arent familiar with it, then ask questions, I have always found that it is really easy to make jokes and talk about yourself as an icebreaker, who doesnt like small-talk? just stay relaxed, talk about what you are going to order, and then tell a funny story about another time you ordered that, lunches are usually informal so I wouldnt try to be too stiff, also order an alcoholic beverage to help yourself loosen up, if you are afraid he wont like that you ordered alcohol, wait to see what he is drinking.
