How do I connect to my wireless network from outside it's range?

I have a wireless network set up in my house (Linksys G) and I would like to knpow how I can connect to it (as it has file sharing capabilities) from a computer that is say, at my office or school.

You can't becuse you are not broadcasting your home network across you whole town, it is only broadcasting within your home.

well if you are out of range then you are out of range

you can't unless you are in it's range.

unless your school/office is a couple of houses away you won't be able to connect to your wireless network that way.

wireless routers have a limited range, they don't often produce a reliable signal to anywhere much further than the bottom of your garden.

the only option available to you is to setup and configure some kind of virtual networking on your home network then access it from school/office using the traditional internet.

You would need to setup some type of remote access or VPN to connect to your network from your work or office. The wireless strength of your wireless router is not designed for that only for use in your house. If it had a range like that, everyone could leech off of your signal.

All the answers that say you're out of luck if you're out of range are wrong. The "wireless" part of your network is irrelevant, because you'll be accessing it over the Internet, not via 802.11 wireless signals.

Your Linksys router has an IP address which is visible from the outside world. You could use that address to connect, but you'd need to change the settings on the Linksys, and probably on your home computers, to allow the specific protocols (HTTP, FTP, etc.) you want to use from work or school.

Depending on how your home network is connected (cable or DSL or something else?) it is likely that your router's IP address will change over time as it is reassigned by your ISP. So you'll need to stay aware of that.
