Anyone know what this festive cake is called, or have a recipe for it?

This cake used to be made by an former office mate of mine, and she'd bring it to share at Christmastime. Her background was maybe Norwegian, but not sure.
The cake was baked in very thin round layers - I'm sure there were 10 or 12 layers. The icing/filling in between the layers was not really sweet, and was colored red and green, in alternating layers so it was really pretty. The cake itself was 'white'.
I know the cake had to be made far ahead of time so it would "cure". You could only eat a small piece because it was so dense and rich!
If this sounds familiar to you, I hope you'll help me out. Thanks.

Thanks so far... but it's not a Bouche de Noel (that's like a cake roll). It's not a torte (I make LOTS of those!).The doberge comes close, but the filling is all wrong, and that cake is meant to be eaten immediately. This one I'm trying to find, you wrap it up for weeks before serving! There are no nuts; yes of course the icing is plain first, then just coloured, but has no flavour itself. The cake itself is very dense and moist, yet solid.
I'll leave this up for more answer tries...

Doberge is the type of cake!

It has a very white sugary frosting doesnt it?I want to say nuts in it...but not sure..its been yrs since ive had the cake. But,i dont know the name im so sorry.
It is yummy though...
maybe she colored the icing that way because i remember it all white..

All I can tell you is that it is some type of torte. Good luck hunting this down!

Try a recipe for a "bouche de noel." It is a French cake that sounds similar to what you are describing.
