I have a small Lan in our office, why doesn't it work correctly?

The lan was set up so we could share a printer, we found however that although my pc could access the 2nd, the 2nd could not access mine, in the end I moved the printer to her pc, but as i said, I can access her shared folder on the network, she can see my pc on the network, but when she tries to access it it says something along the line of 'you do not have the authority to access this account' or something similar

How would I remedy this?

Hi
sounds like you may be using windows xp, the first thing that springs to mind is the guest account. To enable to be able to browse another computer with out having administrator rights, ie to be a guest, you need to go into the users icon in the control panel, you should be able to see the guest account in there and simply by clicking on it you should be able to see the option to enable to turn on the guest account.
My second thought was perhaps a fire wall. do you have norton internet security installed? if so, in there go into personal firewall, then configure, in there you need to click the networking tab, then at the bottom, click wizard, next through that and it should add your network to the trusted zone. ok that. If you dont have norton then the windows firewall could be to blame, again go into the controll panel, in here you have windows firewall, double left click on that, under the advanced tab, untick the local area connection and ok.
Another thought would be if you havnt enabled file and printer sharing. If you click on my computer, on the left you should be able to see the common tasks (if you cant, click on tools, then folder options, on the general tab at the top, left click on show common tasks in folders and ok) now on the left under other places, left click on network neighbourhood. again on the left hand side under network tasks, click on view network connections. In here you can see hopefully the local area connection, right click on this and left click on properties. In here you should see file and printer sharing, make sure that is ticked, if it isnt in there, click install and add it.
Give those things a try and hopefully one of them will solve your problem
regards
Rob

first off what you have to do is go into the individual drives under mycomputer.. and right click on each drive, and go to sharing and security...then...in the second box where it says Network sharing and security X the box where it says Share this folder on the network and X the box where it says Allow network users to change my files...do the same on hers. i have 3 computers i have dealt with this many many times
good luck

Im sorry to tred on other peoples toes but whatever you do.. do not share an entire drive from the root.. its leave your computer open to anybody being able to accidentally or on purpose delete files that make your computer run... only share the file that you want to share.. its more secure as you can keep track of what is being accessed.

The firewalls shouldnt be a problem as you said you can see both computers in my networks... usually if the firewall is effecting you then you cannot see the other computer as that is what the firewall is for.

You are getting an Authorization message which would suggest that your computer is actually contacting the other computer and the other computer is telling yours that your not allowed to look at that.

I presume that you have gone through all network setup wizards that make sure you are both on the workgroup and all the necessary services are started to allow sharing... if not you can always run them again just to make sure as this process give you the options to make sure file and printer sharing is allowed.

The level of permissions on your computer depends on how you are sharing...simple file sharing (xp home and XP Pro) or advance (xp pro only)... if you right click on a folder do you get a simple little check box that allows you to share, change contents and name the share or a complex box that shows you the security tab and options for more than one name ...etc...for the home user (most situations) simple will be it as it is default and easier. you can see in folder options / view tab and there will be a check box for it.

if you are using Simple sharing and the other user does not have an account on your computer..( lets face it you can't have loads of other accounts on your computer) then you need to make sure the Guest account is enabled.. this allows people who do not actually have an user name on your computer to use shared resources. See the source page and there is a section that allows you to quickly check and adjust if necessary.

Well i think i have confused you enough for now... the source page has alot of helpful check points..as this problem has 101 answers.

good luck
