Recruiters, Hiring Managers, and HR staff...is my resume and cover letter good enough?

I'm seeking an administrative position....admin asst, receptionist, office manager, etc. I've been using craigslist mostly(the NYC site), and have a resume on career builder. I think my resume and cover letter are good(both are bulleted). But what I think is good doesn't matter, it is what the person hiring thinks!

This is why I'm pouring my heart out to all recruiters and people who hire to please give their opinions on my cover letter and resume. I take criticism very well, and welcome it graciously during this tough time. Answers has an option for users to send anonymous emails to each other without sharing addresses. If you give me permission, and are open to helping, I will send them to you for reviewing.

If you have any advice or warnings, please share. It is urgent that I find a job by September of this year. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Answers from people who hire for a living only please.

There are several questions I would like you to include in your answer request: Are you currently working? Have you tried the temp agencies in the field you are interested in working? Many times, when one already has a job, it is so easy to get a better one. Especially if you go to an agency and say you wish to be a receptionist. As a receptionist, you will be the first face the people see when they come into the office. You will have a first-hand opportunity to learn the names and contact people of the "movers and shakers". When they see you smiling and working hard, you will have an easy reference. You will be in a position to do things "above and beyond the call of duty". Going the extra mile is the sure sign of someone who wants to get ahead by working smarter and harder. The most important items for you to put on your resume are quantitative statements: While working at this company, I was in the top 10 in sales each year. (for example)

My sales increased from $10K to $13K while I was in this department.

Be certain to mention any awards or accolade in the paragraph that tells of your accomplishment on the job.

Each industry has its own standards of what they want in a resume. Do consider the temp route so you can have an opportunity to have coffee with the people who can be most helpful to you. Find a good employee who knows the ropes and ask them to be your mentor. Summer is an excellent time because regular employees are going on vacation and you will have a chance to fill in for them and show the people in charge your capability. Hope this helps.

A good resume and a covering letter is the starting point and should be good enough to take you to the door of the interviewer. What I would suggest is to go for some courses in your field to enhance the value of your services and to make the employer feel that you are keen to upgrade your skills. All the best
