Are you man of a faith? See details?

I have just got this nice e-mail and wanted to share with all of you. Just discuss if you agree or not?

An atheist and a believer had the
same doctor. Every time they met in the
doctor's waiting room, they would argue
and end up insulting each other.

"You really believe that you are
going to be saved on Judgment Day and
go up to heaven. Do you really believe
everything you read in the Bible, and
everything they told you in church?"
said the atheist.

"I'm not certain of anything," the
believer replied. "Like you I have
doubts. But I still have hope."

"But I don't have doubts," the
atheist cried. "I have only
certainties. For example, I can assure
you that God has nothing to do with the
ache in your knee, and that He doesn't
care in the least how you feel."

"You don't know what you're talking
about. And do you know something? You
are a believer too. I can prove it to
you."

"Really? That I'd like to see!"

"Will you be straightforward and
answer my questions honestly?"

"Of course. I'm an honest atheist."

"Okay. Can you tell me what the name
of the doctor is who you came to see?"

"Well no, he's not here. And I can't
pronounce the replacement's name."

"Well, when you leave his office,
will you check the prescription he
gives you for mistakes, like you would
a lottery ticket?"

"No, of course not. The doctor knows
what he's doing."

"Are you a close friend of the
pharmacist who is going to fill the
prescription?"

"No, I go to a big pharmacy, and I
rarely get served by the same person."

"Do you know what medication the
doctor is going to give you, and what
its side effects are?"

"No."

"And yet you are going to take it,
aren't you?"

"Yes."

"Well, dear friend, I am happy to
announce that you too are a man of
faith!"
___________

Many of us behave like the atheist:
we don't understand how believers can
have blind faith in their God, and we
often find their fervor ridiculous.

And yet, we also have well
established beliefs, and not only when
we go to see the doctor!

Think about it: without faith,
without any certainties, life would be
impossible. We sometimes have to have
blind faith to survive.

"You should never criticize another's
beliefs. That's how you can avoid doing
wrong to people. And there are even
times when we must honor a belief that
we do not share."
Buddha

The Term "Man" do apply to woman sometimes.

See: "Straw Man"
http://www.nizkor.org/features/fallacies...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straw_man_a...
http://www.fallacyfiles.org/strawman.htm...

"A straw-man argument is the practice of refuting a weaker argument than an opponent actually offers. To 'set up a straw man' or 'set up a straw-man argument' is to create a position that is easy to refute, then attribute that position to your opponent. A straw-man argument can be a successful rhetorical technique (that is, it may succeed in persuading people) but it is also a logical fallacy, since the argument actually presented by your opponent has not been refuted, only a weaker argument.

One can set up a straw man in the following ways:
...
Present someone who defends a position poorly as the defender, refute that person's arguments, and pretend that every upholder of that position, and thus the position itself, has been defeated.
Invent a fictitious persona with actions or beliefs that are criticized, and pretend that the person represents a group of whom the speaker is critical."

And there's a very large difference between, say, trusting that my doctor knows what he's doing and believing in some invisible entity that has shown no proof of its existence.

I'm not an atheist, either.

(Edited to address "The Term 'Man' do apply to woman sometimes." First of all, your grammar is atrocious. Second of all, in this case it doesn't.)

I am a woman.

Blind faith is silly. You must ask questions. For everything else we are asked to use our brain. Why should'nt we for this too? I agree with you on respecting peoples beliefs and I respect yours.

I am obviously NOT a person of faith. :)

i am a person of faith

Yes. Everytime you sit down in a chair you have faith that it is going to support your weight. You have faith that your mechanic fixed your car right, or you wouldn't get on the road.

I don't agree with blind faith, however. If you have no reason to believe in God, you shouldn't. The Bible says that there is ample proof. Christianity is really the only religion that tells you to check it out and see if its claims are true. I believe because of evidence, and that evidence gives me faith.

Good one, sometimes we need little things like that to keep us going, thank you

Yes I am. I am a Christian, and I've lived in non Christian countries all my life. However, when I finally came to a Christian country, I found that I was often ridiculed and mocked at just because I am a person of faith. I disagree to the way North American and European societies look at religion and religiousness, I think it's very judgemental.

That is a good one! I like that one. Yes although we don't always agree, I think we should at least respect each other and people's different beliefs. God Bless

as a christian, I have cetainty that could have arived from faith.
I have uncetainty and doubts that always arrive from ignorance and lack of understanding.

FAITH IS CERTAINTY

Those that have only doubt are subtly telling you to be skeptical of everything they say, because they do not know what they are talking about (by their own admission.)

i've heard this story before, thanx for repeating it....since i've logged on to yahoo answers and religion section, i've read nothing but the fun making against islam, its teachings and not only islam, also christians, making fun of there own religion.......well thats not happening.....anyway thanx for sharing this great story.

I think there is a difference between the faith that the atheist had and the belief that a religious person would have though - an atheist is believing in something that they can prove is right - if that man chose to check his medication, he would have had a 90% certainty that it was the right type for his condition and that the prescription was filled out right and the tablets were made right and that he was given the right bottle. However, the religious man cannot prove his faith beyond his own personal knowlege - you cannot prove the existance of God, someone will always disagree - however, most doctors will agree on a treatment for the patient. The two types of faith demonstrated are different.

However, to answer you question, I am a woman of faith in the power of nature and some divine being who is perfect, and of limited faith in man who frequently make errors because of their human, imperfect nature.

First and foremost was Jesus a trained proffessional? NO. Was Jesus paid to make people feel better? NO. Was Jesus even alive at the time of pharmaceudicals? NO. This whole question is quite irrelevant. I know you were trying to prove a point but I am not a person of faith. You can see your doctor, and you're drugs... can you see God or his son? NO. Than answer is always NO.
