Is it OK to have a ceremony even after you've been legally married?

My fiance and I are getting legally married at the County Clerk office in a civil ceremony this weekend, but we want to have a nice traditional wedding ceremony sometime between June-October 2007. Reason for our ceremony being so many months away is because we want to pay for everything and need have enough money saved up. I was just wondering if a church will still marry us even though we're already legally married. Can we just re-use our original marriage license? Please share any advice or stories of experience, I'd really appreciate it.

Being that you will already be married you will not need another license. All you need is an officiant that will perform the ceremony.

You can celebrate either date you want, but the original date on the marriage license will be the legal one that is on file.

Totally fine. A lot of couples do that now adays... it cuts down on the stress leading up to the wedding ceremony...and you don't have to worry about getting cold feet or being run out on, on your wedding day. That's what me and my fiancee are planning on doing aswell :)

Yes, I have seen this done many times. I think it is admirable that you want to cover the costs yourself. Good luck on your new life.

hell yes. it is done all the time congratulations

I eloped to Las Vegas and then a year later had a ceremony in California. It's totally fine.

In the Catholic Church you can have a 'blessing' for all intents and purposes it is a renewal of the wedding vows. If you are not Catholic, I imagine any Christian Church will do likewise. You do not need your license, but take the marriage certificate with you when you see the Parish Priest/Clergy................

my fiance (wife) and I got legally married this past June for insurance reasons. We figured it would save us a ton of money to get married now on insurance alone, than if we waited. So we did just what you are thinking about doing. We scheduled a time at the county clerks office and got married. We made it as blah as we could so we can still plan a big wedding and have it mean as much.....

We actually went and got married at 10:30 in the AM at the clerks office, we to lunch, and then both went to work. We also decided to keep it a secret from everyone. Only one person knows and that is my wife's best friend. We are still planning a big ceremony in March and as far as everyone else is concerned, that is our wedding.....its our little secret that we are already married.

You will not need a marriage license though, because you are already married....and you will need to clue the minister in because they will wonder why they aren't signing a license.

Good luck!!

Yeah I dont see why not. It might just be considered a vow renewal though.

It's called renewing your vows and declaring your marriage to all your friends and family.

Of course it would be ok. If you don't have the money right now but you still want to get married do it. The church won't have to use your old marriage liscense because when you do the ceremony it will be for show.(your all ready married by then) The church won't have a problem with that at all. Less paperwork for them in the end.

i think its perfectly fine to have a city hall marriage then have a real ceremony later. im even thinking of doing it myself just so my dad can be there to walk me down the aisle when he gets back home. he will be gone for the original date but i really want him to walk me down the aisle so i thought that a city hall marriage might help so i can get married but when hes home have another ceremony so that he'll be able to do it.

Just have a reception somewhere. Wait for the vowal renewal until you have been married 10 years or more.

Of course you can have a huge ceremony after you've been legally married. That is what me and my fiance are doing. Wwe want to get legally married next February and because my parents live in Germany we'll have a huge ceremony a year or two later so they can attend our wedding.
You don't even have to do it on the same date, do it whenever... The date on your marriage license from the County Clerk Office will be your official Wedding date though.
Oh and of course - Congratulations!!!

CONGRATS!!!!!! I say yeah. When you pick the church your gonna get married in ask the preacher.

Perfectly fine to do. My best friend did it a couple of years ago. Good luck and Congrats!!!

Absolutely! My sister and my brother-in-law are getting remarried at Disney World. They have been married for three and a half years and they got married at the court house in our home town. Good luck and have fun planning it.
