SSN Duration?

Hi ,
i came to US on work permit last week.Today i went to local SSA office to apply for the SSN.At the counter the officer told me that, my name was misspelled at INS and it'll be send to INS for the further verification.Officer also informed me that the maximum time is 8 weeks for this case.PLease share ur experiences in the similar cases.How early i can expect my SSN.It's a damn urgent for me here as my employer is putting lot of pressure on me.is there any way to track the status. please help me.thanx in advance

You can go to the SS Office and ask for a letter showing that you have applied for a SS#. This will suffice for your employer to complete your I-9 employment eligibility form. The Office should also be able to tell you your number and give you a sheet with that info, as well. Your employer can finish the paperwork and you can take the actual SS card in as soon as it arrives.

I had a similar experience but i received another letter from SS office in 3 weeks saying that they had completed verification with USCIS and the SS application was now being processed by SSA. Got the SS card about 2 weeks after that. So most likely, this 8 weeks duration is worst case scenario. You can obtain a letter from SSA office showing that you have applied for SSN. This should be sufficient to keep your employer happy till you get actual SSN.
