Will consuming fluoxetine makes you ehave like a zombie?

I finally took courage today and step into the doc's office. He gave me fluoxetine 20 mg and wants to monitor me in 2 weeks time. I dunno what these pills are suppose to do for you, it cldnt be that miraculous rite? Sorry a bit of doubt here.

Will they cause a person to be so calm and zombie like? Any other info, pls do share. I do appreciate it thanks.

No, it just feels like that for the first couple of weeks.
If it lasts longer than that, ask your doc if he can prescribe Wellbutrin(as long as you don't have a seizure disorder, in which case you should not take it!) It produces more of a stimulating type of feeling.
I prefer Prozac, which is simply a brand name for fluoxetine, because it helps with depression and anxiety. I can not take any of the benzodiazapines(Valium,Ativan,Xanax, Klonopin, Serax, termazepam, librium) because they are really addictive and short lasting.
Some people can handle the temptation, but I am not one of them. You may be able to take Wellbutrin and have an as needed(they call it PRN) prescription for one of the benzo's. Time will tell.
This is a crappy time in your life for you to have to wait a long time to feel the results, when you are depressed it sometimes seems pointless to do anything, but you have to do it. You will feel a lot better, but it may take a few months to get you on the right medicine for you.
And, Prozac and all the other SSRI's are miraculous to those of us who have gotten well.
Hang in there and wait it out the best that you can. It will be wonderful to be happy, I promise!!!!!!!!!!

Fluoxetine is generally well tolerated. The most common side effects for patients taking Fluoxetine are as follows:

Akathisia
Anxiety
Asthenia
Headache
Flu syndrome
Fever
Vasodilatation
Nausea
Diarrhea
Dry mouth
Dyspepsia
Insomnia
Nervousness
Somnolence
Dizziness
Tremor
Sweating
Dilated pupils
Heartburn
Seizures
Hives
Rash

The following symptoms, anxiety, agitation, panic attacks, insomnia, irritability, hostility, aggressiveness, impulsivity, akathisia (psychomotor restlessness), hypomania, and mania, have been reported in adult and pediatric patients being treated with Prozac for major depressive disorder as well as for other indications, both psychiatric and non-psychiatric. If these symptoms occur the medication should be reduced or cautiously withdrawn.

Since the introduction of fluoxetine, systemic events, possibly related to vasculitis and including lupus-like syndrome, have developed in patients with rash. Although these events are rare, they may be serious, involving the lung, kidney, or liver. Death has been reported to occur in association with these systemic events.

The simultaneous use of fluoxetine with triptans, tramadol or other serotonergic agents can result in a rare, but potentially life-threatening adverse drug reaction called Serotonin syndrome.

Other side effects may occur, including sexual dysfunction. Possible sexual side effects can include anorgasmia, reduced libido and impotence.

A U.S. NTP-CERHR expert panel concluded that the SSRI fluoxetine (Prozac) produces reproductive toxicity by causing reversible impaired sexual function and exhibits developmental toxicity characterized by an increased rate of poor neonatal adaptation.

Because fluoxetine is excreted in human milk, nursing while on fluoxetine is not recommended. The AAP classifies flouxedine as a drug for which the effect on the nursing infant is unknown but may be of concern.

fluoexetine is Prozac. It is a SSRI antidepressant (Selective Serotonin Reuptake inhibitor) Depression probably happens when serotonoin (a neurotransmitter) is absorbed too quickly between synapses in the brain. Prozac penetrates the bbb (brain blood barrier) and prevents serotonin from being reabsorbed. The reaction to Prozac vary from agitation and nervousness to sedation. The antidepressant effects will be very obvious only after about 3 weeks, although you may experience some side effects sooner. While "zombie" is perhaps a wrong description, you will notice that you will not experience intense emotional highs, but neither will experience sharp emotional descents into dark depression. Hence some people claim to feel like zombies (they no longer laugh and cry readily).
Please go to library and get a book "Listening to Prozac".
No matter what you do, always consult your doctor before you make a decision to change dose or discontinue. It is also VERY important to talk to him on an EMERGENCY basis when you start experiencing suicidal thoughts. Only he is qualified to help you. Mine is just a relation of my experiences with Prozac.
Please remember, if it does not work for you ask your doctor if you can try something else.
Hope you feel better soon.

I've been taking this same medication for over 10 years.
It definitely helps. It isn't an immediate feeling like a valium. Rather, it takes up to 30 days to get into your system. It just makes me less anxious, depressed, and irritable. This is an antidepressant. It is widely popular and has helped many people feel like themselves again...I know, why does someone need a med to fell like themself. Stress and a lot of life's happenings can cause mild depression and irritability.
This med simply uses your own body's transmitters to lift serotonin's uptake to the brain. Thats "french" for "It Works". If in about a month you don't feel better or if you feel worse, see your doctor about a different med. Hope this was helpful.
Also in addition, try yoga and exercising. Do what you like, walking, jogging, workout videos or the gym - that's me.
Good luck.
Stay healthy.
Linda

You have been perscribed an SSRI anti-depressant. Each person reacts differently but a zombie is not usually one. Side effects can hinder the benefits for some such as weight gain, dry mouth, constipation. Try it for 2 to 3 months before deciding if it is right for you. If these side effects are a problem try Welbutrin which is a bupropin and not an SSRI however; at higher doses it can cause zombie like in some. These drugs must be expermented with until you find the right one that fits the chemicals in your own body. It can get frustrating during this process.

Fluoxetine has many side effects as people have already stated, however, as an anti-depressant they can be very effective. I have worked in mental health for fifteen years and on the whole have rarely seen it have anything but positive long term effects.

It can cause drowsiness but over time patients develop a tolerance and the majority of side effects should vanish. I would not call it a long term solution for any illness but it does work.
