For Bush, the Welcome Mat Seems a Little Less Welcoming

Finding fine speaking venues at graduation is never easy for late-second-termers, as President Bush is learning. Whereas he once spoke at Ohio State or the University of Texas, now he's left with Florida community colleges or small schools in rural areas that are run by former aides.

But it looks as if it won't be smooth sailing Friday, even when Bush speaks at Saint Vincent College, a small Benedictine school in Latrobe, Pa., run by Jim Towey, former head of the White House Office of Faith-Based Initiatives.

The invitation itself, as we wrote in March, sparked what Towey called "lively and welcome discussion." That included an opposition petition with more than 400 signatures, town hall meetings -- and a 41 to 30 faculty vote backing Towey.

Thirty current and former faculty members, in an open letter to Bush last week, said "in the spirit of Benedictine hospitality" they would "welcome" him to the campus "as we would any visitor" as 1,600 students graduate. And they said they will "welcome those who protest your visit" and hope the college doesn't "turn them away" on Friday.

"Just as we have

Maybe because they don't like him. I don't know but can't say i blame them. I wouldn't want him at my school.

He's not intelligent. He's not articulate. His presidential decisions so far have made a mockery out of science. He's unpopular.

Most republicans couldn't make it through college. That's why most campuses are liberal.

Most colleges are run by liberals.

Its cause everyone hates bush - didnt you know that? I mean hell his approval rating is like in the 20's or 30's

Why is Jane Fonda unwelcomed at the West Point commencement ceremony?

Why would the educated people want to listen to an un-educated man who cannot even speak his own mother tongue?

Because Liberals love to have loud demonstrations, where they try to drown out anyone who disagrees with them. This is because they know they'll be made fools of if anyone hears any side of the story contrary to theirs.

The group of people who so loudly claim to value free speech and "the fairness doctrine" are the ones who have no class and trample free speech.

Look at any demonstration anywhere. WTO demonstrations. Illegal immigration demonstrations. Antiwar demonstrations. All Liberals. All idiots.

Most colleges are havens for liberal losers who can't make it any where in the real world. These liberal losers corrupt the young minds they are paid to teach. They lie to them and only teach their warped sense of morality and politics that the students regurgitate to who ever will listen. All the major schools need to be revamped and the faculty fired(and made to get real jobs) because they are producing a generation of liberal lemmings incapable of independent thought.

Well for one thing - he's a terrible speaker - a complete imbecile.

For another, he is THE single most unpopular president in U.S. history.

Colleges should not be in the political arena because of the controversy it stirs. However, nobody can hide from controversy and at times all of us have to confront situations when we are not comfortable with in life. I too would avoid my commencement if I feel strongly opposed about the speaker.
