I need help finding the title and author of a book...?

I saw a book once that was full of fairytale graphic illustrations with captions for short stories.

The story begins in England...An illustrator visited a publisher at home and brought with her/him (I believe it was a female) a variety of illustrations with captions that s/he had made for stories s/he had written.

When the publisher saw the illustrations, he loved them! They made a deal that the illustrator was to come by his office and bring the rest of the illustrations so that they could set up a publishing deal.

The illustrator never returned to visit the publisher. After several years, the publisher decided to publish the illustrations with captions as a work in their own right, in hopes of finding out who the illustrator was and to share these treasures with the rest of the world.

I saw this at a friend's home several years ago. My friend passed away several years ago and I could never find out any other information about this book.
