Lease transfer?

I met someone on craigslist who is looking to move out of their two bedroom apt they are sharing with a roomate. Her lease will be ending in a month, and she said after that, it will be month to month (and of course an increase). The building requires me to go through the application process to take over her lease (i think this is different than a sublet). So when I fill out the application, aren't I signing to lease for a month, and then it goes month to month? I just want to know that I am not expected to take a 12 month lease...if I ask the leasing office, they may try to say that I have to apply for a 12 month lease.

You would have to read the contract carefully to be sure. If you know you only want one month, make sure that's what is reflected on the contract.

You need to talk to management before you sign anything. You will be jointly responsible for your apartment so that if the other person moves, you can be responsible for the entire apartment. Be very careful if you don't know the person involved. It's hard enough when you do know them. Call management and ask them all the questions you are asking here and how much is the increase. Sometime the rent takes a large jump if another year lease isn't signed. You need to find out all the facts and read everything before you sign. Anything you don't understand thoroughly, get the facts.
