Colorado congressman drafting bill to fix TSA's No-Fly list problems

WASHINGTON - Colorado Congressman Ed Perlmutter (D-Colorado) is co-sponsoring legislation designed to end confusion over names on the no-fly list following a 9Wants to Know investigation into the problem.

The House Homeland Security Committee heard testimony Thursday morning about problems with the No-Fly List.

Colorado Congressman Ed Perlmutter is co-sponsoring a bill along with New York Congresswoman Yvette Clark (D-New York).

The bill would create a "uniform clearance list" to end frustrating and costly delays at our nations airports for hundreds of thousands of American's who have the same names as international terrorists.

During Thursday's hearing, congress heard testimony from several people experiencing the same kind of problems exposed in a 9Wants to Know investigation called "The No Fly Fiasco."

9Wants to Know found 20 people in Colorado who share a name with Irish terrorist John Thompson have trouble getting on flights. They have to be cleared by airline agents first.

9Wants to Know also found children, teenagers and an airline captain who have been false matches against the government's Terrorist Watch List.

Thursday's testimony featured a congressman who told his colleagues that he himself is on the No-Fly List.

Congressman John Lewis (D-Georgia) has been a house member since 1987. He asked the committee to help him get off the No-Fly List.

At the same time, a new government report found that terrorists are still boarding flights.

Leonard Boyle, the director of the Virginia-based FBI Terrorist Screening Center that maintains the watch list, testified before the committee.

Boyle testified there is great room for improvement in the terrorist screening process.

9Wants to Know will have a full report on the Congressional hearing later on 9NEWS.com and on 9NEWS at 6 p.m.

Two weeks ago, the Government Accountability Office issued a report about the Terrorist Watch List and found it has ballooned to more than 755,000 names of suspected or known terrorists, raising questions about its size and effectiveness.

The GAO also found some terrorists have boarded international flights bound for the U.S. because the government is not using its watch list as effectively as it could be.

Once officials learned the suspects were on board, the planes had to be diverted or passengers had to be deplaned, according to the GAO, the investigative arm of Congress.

However, some suspects made it into the country before they were detected.

Additionally, the GAO found the Transportation Security Administration could not specify how many people on its No-Fly List were allowed on domestic flights.

The GAO audit about the Terrorist Watch List was released in late October. It recommends the government make the watch list more accurate, create a new plan and set new goals to make the list more effective.

Twelve agencies, such as the CIA, nominate suspected or known terrorists to join the list.

The TSC sends the records daily to law enforcement working at airports, on the streets, at borders and ports of entry.

Since 2004, 53,000 people were matched to the watch list, according to the GAO.

Sometimes those people were arrested or denied entry in the country.

Most of the people were questioned and released.
