Empty sac found on ultrasound?

The doctor called me at 8 o'clock this morning and asked me to come in for a pregnancy test, due to what was found on the ultrasound from last Thursday, excitement grew and then worry...so I asked what was found. "An empty sack" the nurse said. I was overwhelmed with sadness. I went in right away and the test came out negative. From (atleast) last Thursday, to today could it have been enough time for my HcG levels to lower enough not to register on a urine test? I asked to also have a blood test, but the nurse told me they could only do what was ordered by my doctor (I was sooo upset!). My doctor won't be back in the office until Monday, so I am totally freaked out, and to top it off I have a UTI! Was this another miscarriage, or possibly something else? For those of you who don't know I had a missed miscarriage last October. Please share thoughts and personal stories. Thank you!

Is it possible that I am in the early stages of pregnancy that nothing can be seen on the ultrasound except the sac? I had bleeding last week which I though was my period, but now am wondering if that's what it really was.

Does the sac develop as soon as the egg has implanted? Can anyone guess how far along I was?

I was given some antibiotics to take for the UTI, but it has a BIG warning for women TTC, pregnant, or breastfeeding...I am very hesitant to take it as I am still holding out for a little glimmer of hope. What do you think?

Hi Jamie!

Goodness! This is a alot to take in for you! But, this definitely proves you are fertile. No worries there.

The empty sac could be a blighted ovum. But, with a blighted ovum, as in mine, your hCG levels can continue to rise for weeks and weeks until they usually discover it during the 8-week ultrasound or the woman has bleeding in the 1st trimester. This is what is confusing because the pregnancy test came out negative. Yes, a blood test is needed!

Should this be a viable pregnancy, I am worried about the antibiotics you have been taking. Your doctor will have to discuss things with you for I do not know the exact effects in the early early early stages. But, if it has a warning for women TTC, pregnant, ext., then maybe stop them and drink LOADS of cranberry juice (the real stuff, not the Juicy Juice stuff).

BEST of luck, PLEASE keep us updated!!

I'm sorry to say, but it doesn't sound good. My only bit of knowledge is from when a friend was pregnant. At her first ultrasound they found one healthy heartbeat and one empty sac. She would have had twins, but one wasn't viable. The sac just absorbs back into the body.

My daughter had several positive pregnancy tests and was so excited as she and her hubby have been trying for a baby for some time. She went to the doctor, tests again came out pregnant, but when she had the ultrasound, they found an empty sac. She had what is called a blighted ovum. The egg gets fertilized, implants, but for a variety of reasons, a baby just never develops. After the miscarriage, she was told to wait for about 3 months before trying for another baby.
