Contemplating going back to school as an adult with 2 kids, can anyone relate and ...?

Currently, I'm in a career thats going nowhere... I'm working as a manager in a OB/GYN office, and I work part time in the ER.

I've been thinking a lot about returning to school. I'm currently a RPN.

The choices I'm leaning towards are going through medical school to become a family doctor... or go for my registered nurse, extended class (nurse practitioner).

These are both full time, 4+ year programs...
I'm 31 years old, married, with 2 children aged 11 & 6.

Can anyone relate to the desire to return to university as an adult with a family?
Can anyone share their experiences or give me some opinions on what you would do?
Thanks!

Should have posted my location... My apologies... I'm in Southwestern Ontario, Canada

This could be a good time for you to return to university - the ages of your children, plus the go-nowhere nature of your current job. And at age 31, you likely won't be the oldest person in your class - not at all.

Many of my students are adults. I find that they are some of my best students. They are driven and focused, and they know what they're in school for. Most of them have families, and so they become quite good at organisation and time management. It won't be easy to do this, but it is doable, and a lot of other students are in your same situation, so you won't be alone.

As for what to study? That's entirely up to you. Are you in the UK? You'd want to research the demand for those two fields, post graduate, potential salaries, and the satisfaction of people doing those jobs in your country. Also consider which you, personally, feel you'd prefer. Also think of which will be more demanding on your time, and if you have the time to devote to it. In the US, becoming a doctor takes far longer than becoming a nurse practitioner does, so here, that would be a factor - in your country, I'm not sure. But consider all these factors. Then decide.

But absolutely, definitely go back to university. Either choice - nursing, or family doctor - are solid careers, and you'll no longer be going nowhere - you'll be, most definitely, heading somewhere good.
