Should children be allowed at the workplace? |
i work security at a corporate office building and we have a tenant who is picked up by his wife at least twice a week. She parks in front of our main lobby doors in the fire lane! and after she can't stand her kids bouncing around in the car anymore, she lets them out to come inside our lobby to wait for their dad! then they are bouncing around our lobby like mexican jumping beans. WTF? We even advised they should probably wait outside since he's coming straight down and she still sends them back inside. Unfortunately, we cannot say anything to the wife accept to move her car from the fire lane because we will get in trouble from our boss for not being "customer service oriented" what do you think about that? the only problem i have with this situation is that the children are not being supervised. no one is with them, they aren't at mommy or daddys desk/office learning what they do and how an office should be run. they are in the lobby where everyone comes to check in and greet for "professional" appointments. we have a job to do as far as the building goes, and we can't watch the children, make sure they are out of harms way, not disturbing other workers, and also watch inner and outer perimeters of the building,do escorts, ect. it would be totally different IF they were quiet, well behaved little angels but they are not. they are acting like rabid monkeys climbing on everything and squeeling like they are outside.then we have to get the strange looks from people that work here like it's OUR fault they are disturbing their phone calls. In this situation it will be hard not to cause ill feelings. I definitely "do not" think children should be allowed in a functioning work environment. I feel that you should speak to the tenant about it first. I work in a restaurant and some folks bring their little one in occasionally. I'm so afraid that one of them will get behind a cook or kitchen person and get seriously hurt. Very frustrating. In your thing there must be someone in higher authority than can help. In any case handle it carefully because most people think their children are angels no matter what...good luck She shouldn't be parking in the fire lane, but I'm not sure why letting her kids hang out in the lobby is such a big deal. Isn't that what the lobby is for? When I first saw your question, I thought it was going to be about somebody actually bringing their kids to work with them, but I don't think this is the same thing. It probably isn't that long that they spend waiting for her husband, and perhaps she should discipline them a little better, but I don't think she should have to make them sit in the car. My kids often come to the workplace. But they are well-behaved and quiet. I think it's good for the kids to see what a parent does for a living. All places of work, even offices can be dangerous places so no child should be allowed to enter unsupervised, your company will also probably not be insured if they are hurt so you should complain discreetly without offending anyone. If it doesn't hurt you, it shouldn't matter. Maybe you need to lighten up a bit. They should not until they're 12. |
