How do you get a job in social services?............?

I have a bachelor degree in sociology and an associates degree in social work. I have been looking for a job in social services. I would like to work in an office setting. I went on many interviews for more than 2 years and found nothing. I would like to know if anyone with HR experience in a social service setting could give me any information on finding and starting a job without particular experience in the field. I have an internship in case management, but that does not seem to impress employers. I used to also have on my resume my volunteer experience with the red cross. I was told by relatives It seems like I am too perfect for the jobs I apply for in the past, so I removed my internship, my volunteer experience, and my associates degree from my resume. If you can provide any assistance/ information/ or advice, please let me know. Thank you, for your time.

Do not listen to your relatives, and get that volunteer and internship experience and associates degree back on your resume!! They are delusional! If you have been on "many interviews", then your resume is actually saying all of the right things, since it's getting you in the door; perhaps something is happening in your interview that is turning people off?

Call people you worked with at your internship and volunteering activities (you should have people from these experiences as references) and let them know you are looking for employment. Ask them to review your resume and offer you advice on how to make it more representative of your skills and experience. Ask them for interviewing tips as well. Networking is critical for finding a job -- you need to be on the minds of people who know about jobs that you might be qualified for.

Also, contact the career placement offices of your universities where you got the bachelor degree and associates degree and let them know you are looking for a job; they may have specific job leads.

Keep volunteering, since this increases your networking opportunities. Don't just stuff envelopes -- look for opportunities where you will counsel and advise people in need (a domestic violence shelter, a homeless shelter that has career counseling. Planned Parenthood, etc.).

If there is a local association of social workers, join it!

You can't join the NASW unless you have a minimum of a BSW. Report It

Increasingly social service agencies want someone with a minimum of a BSW and ideally an MSW. Now there really is no such thing as an AA in social work (that is to say an AA in social work is not a recognized social work degree - a CC can call a degree anything they want - that does not make them recognized by the profession). I would suggest that your best bet at this time would be to go on and get you MSW - this will be the best way into the social services.
