Military to USPS?

I'm hoping somebody out there has done this..my husband is gettin out of the military and wants to go into the United States Postal Service. What are the odds of him actually getting in the area that we are wanting? Are post offices always hiring? I've heard they like to get people from the military, so does that mean they'll make room for him? I don't want him to apply for something he's not likely to get...

**edited** I know he has to apply like everyone else...I'm not suggesting he gets special treatment. I was questioning the liklihood he would get a job once the tests and applications were filled out. Thanks.

You can only apply to the USPS for a job that is currently open..You have to search in your state for the position and if one is available then you can apply to take the test..

Its a long process and there are not many openings..It is hard to get fired/hired in the post office..They will not make room for you..

As a veteran there are some few jobs that are for veterans only..And on all jobs veterans get bonus points that are added to the final score of their test..

Just use this link and search your home state..Keep checking it and when you see what your interested in click it and it will tell you if it is a veterans only position or not..

No job is promised to any one although being in the service gives him a bump up in the ranks simply because of the skills that he,s learned in the service ; on time stay late takes orders professionalism courteous all the above although if that's the work he,s looking for you have to be patient it,ll come he, just might have to wait for a while be fore they call him keep your address and phone number the same give them your e-mail address if applying on line and sit back and wait his ship will eventually come just be there when it does.good luck.

he will get points over other people..and its actually easier for a military person retired or whatever to get a job than say someone like me...he needs to get a postal book and start studying to take the exam...and he may start out in a crap job but in the long run end up with a great job most jobs start out between 14 and 17 bucks an hour

EDIT - I dunno why replying to your mail didn't work. What I was basically saying is to consider testing as close to home as possible and get in the system even if it is in Houston. Once in, its easier to relocate mainly because many don't want to.

Good luck!

He certainly will not get the job if he does not apply for the postal position. Military people coming out of the service go into many fields and the post office is one. Remember that the post office is NOT a federally run program.

My dad retired several years ago from the army and got hired by the USPS.

There is a series of tests you have to take but it's likely he'll get hired because they are run by the federal gov.

He has to apply just like anyone else. He may get some veteran's preference hriing points.

He can get a job of course, most I know from usps came from military.they are I think more of a priority because they served for our country.

As other have stated above me, he'll have to test for an open position. I'll relay the experience of a close Shipmate who retired a few months before I did in 2005. Your Husband will have to schedule an exam for the location where you want to go & he must physically be there to take it. My buddy did this while she was on terminal leave. If he does well enough on the exam he'll be placed on a list as a potential candidate. She scored quite high, but wasn't called for an interview until about 1 year later. Not sure if it matters, but she took the exam for City Carrier. The interview was fine & she was hired, then attended a few weeks of training. She loves her job & gets some great exercise (walking approx. 7 miles on her route), but she does complain that the Post Office is nothing like the military. As someone stated above, it's almost impossible to get fired because of the union & the work ethic of her fellow carriers isn't like the military. The work is hard & can be hazardous, but the pay & benefits are decent. To get back to your question, the Post Office does indeed like to hire Vets. He'll have hiring preference (5 points, 10 for a disability) added to the exam score.

Keep in mind what I relayed to you only pertained to City Carriers. Clerks, mail handlers, etc. may be a completely different story.
