Is this responsible behavior for a doctor? |
My daughter is 23 and is a type 1 diabetic on an insulin pump. Last night she did'nt feel well and took her glucose reading. It was 450. She called her doctors service and he called her back. She evidently had a crimp in the pump tube and was not getting any insulin so she fixed it and her sugar went down. The doctor told her to come in to the office that morning. She went into the office and waited an hour and was put in a room. She could hear what was being said in the next room and heard the nurse tell the doctor that she was there. He said he did'nt want to see her and sent his pa in. My daughter is upset that he did'nt want to see her after he had told her to come in. She is not a model patient and does'nt take her blood sugars like she should. I think the doctor has lost his patience with her I would like some other opinions on this. Do you think she needs to find another doctor? I can understand the doctor losing patience with your daughter but, he should have used some manners in explaining to her why and that she should seek another doctor. That said ,she really needs to understand how important testing is every day. I too wear an insulin pump and test minimum of 6-8 times a day. The whole point of going through the process and expense of a pump is for better control but, you can't achieve that without regular testing. I don't know brand of pump she has. I have a Medtronic Minimed pump and I was just given free of charge a USB device that takes the last 2 weeks worth of readings, carbs and boluses with graphs and charts that I can download and print from my pump. It is called carelink and you can order it online. I can bring those print outs to my doctor so she can see any patterns and make any changes that may be needed. It is an awesome tool to have. I always hated having to carry pen and paper and writing down all my recordings now I don't have to. Hope this helps :) If he has "lost his patience" with her then he should drop her as a patient (which he has every right to do), but he shouldn't talk about her when she can hear him. I can see where he may "lose his patience", I have watched my mom who is a diabetic do EVERYTHING exactly the way her doctor tells her, but still ended up in kidney failure, being on dialysis for over a year, have a transplant, etc. Your daughter really needs to do what the doctor tells her to, this is her life that she's messing with! I am a type 1 diabetic and I also use a pump, I have seen great Dr.'s and awful ones. If I were your kid I would have felt the same way. She should find another Dr., I would. There needs to be a good relationship and trusting feelings between the 2 of them and the staff. Otherwise it opens the door for her hiding things and new things not being addressed and everything gets out of control. Trusting your Dr. is important. im 13 and im not the perfect diabetic.. if ya know what i mean. and i have this *****-of-a-doctor that like, gets MAD if my bloods high. not only does she get mad at me, she gets mad at my parents, like this is their fault i cant control myself. she is awfully rude. but she at least does her job, and sees us when she has to. so that is very irresponsible of your daughters doctor. and i suggest you try to find a different one. First off to the people getting on her case for having a 450 are out of line. You don't know anything about this girls diabetes management. That is not right on the Doctor's I would find another Doctor that will be there is any type problem shouls arise . I don't blame your daughter for being upset over this at all. No its not being responsible..I would find another one. Yes irresponsible. I think when doctors get fed up with patients they should tell them in no uncertain terms that they should seek another doctor and give reasons why. |
