Is being a christian a pre-requisite for being president of the US?

I know what the law says, that no religious test shall ever be administered for public office, but is that really how it is?

They made a big deal out of JFK just because he wasn't a protestant!!

People get so full of malice while the accuse Obama of being a Muslim.

Or can you imagine an atheist trying to be president? The field day the media would have with that?

All the candidates need to give all this lip service to the religious wackos in this country and make sure they know that their faith has played an important part in their lives.

Remember Obama and Clinton's faith debates?

So, my question, would it be possible for anybody other than a christian to be president of the US?

Feel free to chime in with any other insight on this that you might have, just try and be nice, at least to me...

There has never yet been a non-Christian President of the United States, but that's not to say there never will be. It's always possible that people will stop voting representatives into office because of their races, religions, and other "distinguishing" characteristics and start choosing their votes for REAL reasons; there might one day be a Jewish, Muslim, Deist, or even (sarcastic gasp) Atheist President, but sadly, that day does not seem imminent. So, my answer would have to be, "Yes, it is possible for someone that is not a Christian to be elected to the position of President of the United States; but unfortunately, just because it's possible doesn't mean that it will actually happen anytime soon."

It's not a written rule, but each candidate must claim to be christian if he or she is to stand a chance at being elected. They don't really have to be christian, they just have to label themselves as that.
What we really need is an atheist leader, so that religion doesn't govern his or her policies.

BEING a Christian is not a pre-requisite, but PRETENDING to be a Christian definitely is.

Being a member of the skull and bones society and being a free mason is more of a prerequisite than being a christian is. Secret societies such as the free masons and skull and bones boast some of the most powerful leaders of the 20th century as their membership.

Constitutionally, yes. In reality, at this time, no. America's largest religion is Christianity. It follows that the majority of voters would be Christian. Maybe someday we will all just be able to respect and love each other. Right now, so many of us use religion as a weapon. "God's War."

IMHO-Yes.
Most people here in the US believe in God.
And Christianity is dominant-or at least claimed.
I would NEVER vote for an atheist-if I knew.

I just feels our values would be too different.
Yet is didn't work out that well this last time did it?

Man...

And Lincoln was NOT an atheist-not sure about Jefferson..

no, because the biggest voting population is christian, and they would not vote in some one who did not believe in God. Its not the kind of christian that gets you a win unless your oponent is christian...if your the only christiand running....
there is no contest...

..........In God We Trust......

Not according to the constitution! However, our constitution is based on Judeo-Christian principles, so a Christian or even a Jewish person would understand our government better than say a Muslim or an atheist.

Atheists have about as much chance of being elected as homosexuals...what a shame!

Lincoln was an atheist (agnostic?) and Jefferson was an agnostic.

Legally? No

But atheists are the most disliked group in America. So atheists couldn't get elected today

The presidents are anything but Christian. In fact theyer abunch of damned masonic devil worshipers.

I'm against it.

I only wish our future president is Atheist or Buddhist. Should be great if he/she has great augment over oil., I mean GAS!!!

Cool.

Unfortunately, yes.

It seems that way. That is only because the majority of voters are christians. too bad for everyone else.... :(
Blessed Be

I could barely imagine an atheist US president. In Canada it's a common thing, but right south... just woah.

-Pretty much

no

We vote our conscience, values and issues at stake !!! Religion has a lot to do with all three !!!

It would be nice to believe we could have a president who isn't influenced by the lunatic fringe.
The fact is, any atheist who tried to run for high office would be crucified on a daily basis by Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, and the neo-con fascists on Fox News. They'd be calling him anything but human, but more than anything, they would question his patriotism. It occurs to me anyone putting their gods ahead of their country are the ones being unpatriotic.
I think we need a Constitutional amendment, in support of the First Amendment, which would make it unlawful for any president or anyone running for president to reveal or be questioned about his religious affiliations. Maybe then we could get some really qualified people in office who are less fearful of the right-wing dominated media and their religious-fanatic supporters.

Well Craig here is my two cents worth on this subject. The reason why we swear on The Bible in American courts of law is because The United States of America's laws and judicial system is and always has been based on The Mosaic Laws written by the God Yahweh, who is the God America always worshiped. Americans including Christians in America have technically been under The Mosaic Law of Yahweh since America was founded by our forefathers. We are Christians who follow Jesus' moral laws but it is His Father Yahweh's laws we swear to to tell the truth to in our courtrooms. So America would be making a blatant act of blasphemy by electing any presidential candidate that is not a worshiper of Yahweh as our leader.

Was Bill Clinton a Christian? He said he was a Southern Baptist. But the convention quickly denied him. Obama said he was a Christian--but look at what he believes and who his friends are. Jimmy Carter said he was a Christian...well thats not as bad as Bill C claiming it.
I think we would be hard pressed to find a past president that was actually a Christian.
The only one we have had in the last few years that actually claimed to be "born again" was GW. I agree that may be debatable....but no one else has claimed that. BTW...the prerequisite for being a Christian is that you "must" be born again.

That is the whole problem, listening to people, instead of listening to God.
Yes, a Christian should be president.

Obama and Clinton are Christian in name only, they do not support Christian values.
