Prostitution -- anti or pro legalisation ?

Would allow soliciting on the streets ? Brothels... ? Disguised as massage parlours ? How ?
I admit that I think it is a necessary service for the thousands of men who really cannot get sex in any other way.... either because they are very shy... or severely disable that makes them unattractive to women. Fortunately I have never had to use the servies of one but there are those who do.
Also do you think it would reduce rape ?

I find this a difficult issue and I am interested in views from both gentlemen and ladies. -Thanks

" joe m " -- I can't disagree totally with what you have said but how does one deal with those whose only possibility of sexual relations with the opposite sex is with a prostitute ?

Hello,

(ANS) No.1 The problem with Prostitution is that its a social problem on exactly the same scale as the illegal Drug's use problem and has many similarities. Such as supply & demand for example.

No.2 Look! lets face it, the reality is Prostitution is NOT going to go away and even banning it or making it 100% illegal WONT solve the problem, it would just drive it underground IMO.

No.3 Women DON'T make a lifestyle choice or make a career choice to become hookers or prostitutes. They are driven to that kind of work from poverty, desperation, because they have small children to bring up & feed, because they have a hard drug habit to feed. Because the money appears easy and the money can be addictive.

No.4 Probably the best and most honest situation would be very like in the Netherlands where the sex industry is managed at a local authority level and where the working conditions are as good as they can be for the women, sexual health can be closely monitored in the age of HIV & AIDS.

No.5 I don't think its possible or easy to have an open & honest debate in this country about the subject of Prostitution because the church & moralists get on their high horses about this topic. Why? because of course its a moral & ethical matter at heart.

No.6 Sadly, there are ALWAYS going to be men who want sexual services thats just a simple FACT, because they have a wide number of problems. And the services of a prostitute may be their only outlet.

No.7 There are always going to be clever attractive women with beautiful bodies who will sell their bodies for money. But morally is that any worse than someone who works shifts in a window less room for 8hrs in a call center being paid the minimum wage (about 拢5.50 per hr) thats 拢44 per shift. When a sex worker can earn anything from 拢150 to 拢1,000 per hour for personal services. Who is being exploited more here in this example??

**Its an extremely complex & difficult subject with No! easy answers I'm afraid.

Ivan.

prostitution is one of the oldest occupations in the world, both men and women use this service and will always do so. in my mind it should be legalised thus reducing the sleazy and seedy aspect of this occupation. there should be a system put in place where the male or female clients can be assured that the person that they are going to bed with are "clean" and "healthy" and are honest working people. it should be monitored and if the "clients who wish to use this service, it might remove the undesirables on the street out of work as their services would no longer be required. warm bed in a nice location or a car up a back alley there no comparison really.

Prostitution is a vile crime against humanity that dehumanizes young women.

Legalizing it would only serve to legitimize the degradation of women.

If someone is willing to give or take money for sex, they probably shouldn't be procreating in the first place.

The gene pool would be better off without them.

They should deal with the emotional issues that drove them towards prostitution (as whore or john) rather than just prolonging their cycle of destruction.

I feel sort of mixed about it. I realize some people reach the slums of their life and resort to prostitution to survive, and other people it's the only thing they know how to do but then it is very easy to spread diseases so I think people should have a closer look at the clients so as to not spread HIV/AIDS/gonorrhea/etc. to any other clients. I also believe prostitution, if legalized, should be taken off streets and put in like brothels so that any children aren't disturbed from seeing hookers and prostitutes in the road, when they walk through a city or something.

If it was legalized it should be for over 21s only, regular health checks etc.

I still think that the Eastern European girls would suffer as their pimps would undercut the legal prostitutes and it would go even further underground.

I am unsure if it would work because some kids would still work the streets however something has to be done so looking at countries where prostitution has been legalized would be a good idea.

It's the oldest profession in the world. If it's legal it's regulated and Gordon can tax it. How many married men get sex on pay day only?

Not in favour of open soliciting on the streets, but registered brothels is better for everybody.

It's been legalised here, [NZ] & the problem has increased......girls as young as 14 making a living......increased drug use, with prostitution paying for the drugs......more pimps running huge prostitution rings....
Also brothels are now in the suburbs.....homes bought just for brothels to be set up...not good in family areas...
So, I'm against it....Also more prostitutes have been murdered since this profession was legalised.....
The other thing that's happening is Asian girls are coming to live here, purely to be prostitutes, with Asian Madams as bosses....this has also brought triad crime into our country.

As christians we are to believe that sex with anyone outside of marriage is wrong. (now that I got that out of the way) Prostitution is a business. People pay for a service and there is no reason why it shouldnt be legal. We get paid for damn near everything we do, why not sex?

Not sure Red. It will always happen, regardless and legalisation should make it safer. I can't see how it will reduce heinous crimes such as rape though, as that's all about power over the victim and reasonable men don't commit such vile crimes.

Legalised brothels would not only reduce rape assaults but also help to reduce prostitute murders.
There would be a lot less females selling sex on the streets and much more selling sex in a safely guarded enviroment, therefore reducing serious assaults and sexually provoked murders on prostitutes

In favour of legalising it for years. Oldest profession in the world. Keep them safe and healthy. I don't however think it will stop rape happening. There will always be control freaks that cannot get it up any other way. Men can get raped too don't forget.

Defo pro. I was based in germany for 4 years and I saw the upside of legalised prostitution. Better control, a lot safer for the ladies and the blokes who used them.

Prostitution should be legalised, its safer for the girls, and gets them off the streets, it's the oldest profession in the world and its never going to go away! xx

I am pro-pros.
Legalise it now and keep these women safer and without fear of prosecution and persecution.

A thorny subject. My own view is that it should be legalised in order to better protect those involved in this particular profession.

I just think there are women putting it out for free every saturday night so who's the dumb one the girl who does it for the price of half a lager or the woman who's getting 拢200. an hour?

I say get back to basics when folk had respect and morals and stop this terrible society , of filth non morals etc, wee are heading for a REAL MELTDOWN ,IT surely cant continue they way it is!!

I AM FOR PROSTITUION AS LONG AS IT IS LEGAL AND MEDICAL CONTROLLED LIKE IN EUROPE

those girls are old enough to male up their own minds whether to prostitute them selves or not.

Rape it would not reduce...rape is not a matter of sex, it is a matter of power and abuse. Sex is just one of the weapons used.

It should be subject to health, hygiene and occupational safety laws, the same as every other business where workers' or customers' health and safety are involved.

It should also be subject to labour laws, to ensure workers are in it voluntarily, not forced or coeerced, and are old enough to work.

Hours, locations of business and permitted advertising could also be legitimately regulated, as they are for many other businesses, such as hotels, heavy or noisy industry, alcohol and cigarettes, etc

Apart from that, it is a service provided by one consenting adult to another, and should have no more interference from the law than other personal services, such as massage, hairdressing, dentistry etc.

Many of the problems associated with prostitution are caused by the fact that it is illegal, especially the abusive treatment of many sex workers (male as well as female) by their employers/pimps.

The only true reasons for making it illegal have always been moral or religious ones. The State should not impose the views of any one religion on its citizens, as they have freedom to follow the religion or beliefs of their choice. This is an increasingly important point as global migration brings more and more people of different faiths together into every national population.
(This does not mean the State should not prosecute murderers: in murder the victim is not a consenting party -- and murder, variously defined, is considered abhorrent by all people regardless of their religious adherence),

I'm against legislation because i feel pimps and standover merchants get the majority of the money and they also traffic humans against their will, with the promise of good jobs only to end up in a brothel in some foreign country. Amsterdam has encountered problems with it's liberal stance on prostituion. My other fundamental problem is that alot of prostitues do it to feed their drug addictions, not enough free rehab facilities and drug support programs are available without costing a fortune . I definately do not think it will have any impact on rape statistics if it is legalised because it's rarely about the sexual act for dirty rapists but the power and violence they can weild over victims. At the end of the day, there will always be working girls with or without legislation, i just want governments to protect them as much as possible coz they are humans too. ( Fyi men can be pro's as well)

as is so often the case the good people of scandinavia are on the ball

Sweden's Groundbreaking 1999 Legislation

In 1999, after years of research and study, Sweden passed legislation that a) criminalizes the buying of sex, and b) decriminalizes the selling of sex. The novel rationale behind this legislation is clearly stated in the government's literature on the law:

"In Sweden prostitution is regarded as an aspect of male violence against women and children. It is officially acknowledged as a form of exploitation of women and children and constitutes a significant social problem... gender equality will remain unattainable so long as men buy, sell and exploit women and children by prostituting them."
