Can my apartment limit me to their ISP and block ports?

I just signed a new lease at an apartment and signed up for their "high speed internet service." I connected everything only to find my speeds are barely above 100kbps, and all of my ports except for 80 and a handful of others are BLOCKED. Please tell me their is some FCC act out there that would allow me to get another ISP. According to the leasing office, I can only have their service. I can't live with this... Please help me with something I might be able to do. Thanks.

To catnodog. No, it's not wifi.. Wifi might be faster in this case. It is cable internet, atleast in the sense that you use a cable modem and coax cable. Other than that, you might as well call it dial up.

I tried calling my local provider and they said that I was unable to get their service because this complex has a contract with someone else.

I'm guessing this is a wi-fi connection in your complex.
That is outrageous. Can't you just contact you local cable co. and get Internet service? or you local phone co.and get DSL? How are you only bound to what the apartment complex offers?

Your leasing office could be using this for security reasons. There is no way you can unblock those ports. Port 80 is the port you use for the internet. Maybe the other ports are insecure so they blocked them. Many business do that do to secure their systems.

Open the ports up. Unrestrict websites, it's quite easy.
