Benefits of being in charge? |
The new customer service manager on my job called me and another guy into his office yesterday afternoon and told us he wanted us to work on a project. We could come in early or even stay late to do it. What he wanted us to do was one a bookshelf in his office there were 15 - 20 3 ring binders that he wanted us to pack in some boxes and put in a storage room. Maybe it's me but I don't look at that as a special project. That looks like passing the buck. It's 15 - 20 books. Why can;t he just pack them and cart them down to the storage room? I'm not going in early to do that kind of work. Maybe I'll be looked at as not a team player but I'm not gonna do this. Plus, it's not a 2 person job. Next thing you know he'll be asking us to wash his car or go pick up his dry cleaning after hours. Anyone else ever had a boss expect them to do things like this that they could do themselves? I once worked for a very small company and every during the summers the owner of the company would call out to the job and have us in the warehouse come out to his house and help plow his fields or cut down trees that had blown over in a strorm. I figured out that if you break one garden tool he doesn't want you back. I've driven his tractor and even cleaned up behind a construction crew when he installed a doorway into his wife's bathroom through a wall so she wouldn't have to walk around a corner to get to the bathroom. I would do it only if I could get to use his house on week ends in order to boink his daughter. Yep, that would make him stop from asking for such ridiculous favors. Yes, I agree. This is his special project, not yours. And 20 books do not require for you to come in early or late. The way I always handle situations like this is by speaking my mind precisely at the moment their occur. First people react surprised, but trust me, they get used to it. As long as it is about things, their have nothing to do with your job area. And having his 20 something books removed, is laziness on his part, and he can be called on that! um... how about the extra money you could make over time ? I would go ahead and do it, this time. Then, I would tell this boss, that this type of work was not expected of you from the past, and that seems more like the job of a personal assistant. I'd ask for a description of your job duties. I definately think you need to say something, or you'll end up picking up this persons lunch, dry cleaning, and making coffee runs. If these things are not in your job description, and he keeps trying to impose them, see about filing a compliant. |
