Vets returned to active duty ???

My dad is a doctor and my mom works at his office. Sometimes my mom takes half of what she hears and fills in the rest. She is claiming a lot of WWII vets were forced back into active duty after 9/11. She said the insurance status of a lot of their vet patients changed and also the vets themselves were claiming they were now active. Also, that they weren't asked for their service, but forced back into service.

I find this hard to believe.......my mom isn't the type to make up stories, but yeah, she does assume things. I googled this for a bit and am not seeing anything

If there had been a call up of WWII vets, it would have been in the news.
Viet Nam and Korean vets would have been called up before them.
They may have been joking and she took them seriously.

There was a change in insurance for military retirees in Oct 2001. If on Medicare, they could drop Part B from commercial insurance companies, since it become part of the free coverage from the government.

"TRICARE for Life (TFL) originated in October of 2001 to fufill a promise of life-long health care many were given when they first joined the military. Prior to 2001, TRICARE coverage expired at age 65 forcing military retirees, their families, and survivors to rely solely on Medicare. TFL provides military health care coverage to TRICARE beneficiaries 65 years of age or older."

When TRICARE beneficiaries (other than eligible active duty family members) become entitled to Medicare Part A, on the basis of age or disability/end-stage renal disease and purchase Medicare Part B, they do not experience a break in TRICARE coverage. TRICARE For Life (TFL) pays secondary to Medicare. The following is a summary of TRICARE for LIFE and dual eligibility:"

No WWII vets were called up. They can call people back up, but only on very selective basis. But it would be vets from Viet Nam or the first Gulf War. They would only call folks that have exceptionally limited and specialized knowledge and skills. If they are called up I believe its in a civilian status with per diem pay and benefits, which is much higher than those that wear a uniform.

My wife's grandfather was a heavy weapons designer/repair specialist. They called him back during the first Gulf War. He had 40 years experience on a certain tank turret, so they called him to have him recommend ways to repair the excess wear they were getting from the sand. I think he went back for 6 months and his pay was near $100,000 after all the extras.

WWII vets? None were forced into active duty after 9/11, there's not even a single one in the services still if I'm correct.

The U.S. military is an all-volunteer force, no one has been "forced" to active duty, though Guard and Reserve units have been deployed and some IRR may have been activated (I'm not sure).
