What is the Starting Salary for Graduates with Bachelor of Science in Accounting?

For those of you who have graduated with a Bachelor's of Science in Accounting (preferably in the past 2 yrs) what was your starting salary?

I will be graduating this July 2008 with my BS in Accounting : D

I went on an interview yesterday and it was w/ a temp agency. I have held down a variety of positions while in undergrad from Office Assistant (w/ minor bookkeeping and assisted w/ a few A/P responsibilities), to Admin Assistant, to Receptionist, to Assistant/ Accounting Intern for DC Gov't Department of Health. My experience in the grunt work/ support services sector ranges about 4 yrs.

This woman conducting my interview told me that my starting salary will be $30K, that's "our" target figure in placing me. I understand that it will get my foot in the door but I was insulted. 4+ Years in undergrad for that? People fresh out of high school and w/ no degree make that much (no offense). I might as well stay in admin support services for that. I'm looking elsewhere...

I believe the mean/average income starting at my level should be at lest $40-46K...

Tell that lady to blow you 2x..Starting salary for someone with a BS in Acct is usually mid to upper 40s.

I also have plans of pursuing my CPA its always been a goal of mine since high school : ) Report It

Try to get a job as an auditor at one of the Big 4 accounting firms and you should be in that range that you were hoping for (it does vary though depending on where you live!). Even if you don't want to do this job for the long term, I would definitely recommend it to start out because it is good pay, they are always looking to hire people right out of college, it helps you get your CPA license, and makes you VERY marketable for future employment. Good luck!

You'll do much better if you spend at least two years in public accounting and get your CPA. If you don't want to go that route, get a staff accountant job in a large corporation. Don't waste your time temping.

30K is low. I reckon 40K would be the average starting salary.
