My brother has a misdemenor bail jumping charge on his record. He recieved probation and community service for

his crime. I was told by someone in the Department of Corrections office that he could have a Fed. warrant issued for his arrest because he did not notify them that he was leaving and moving to another state. What can happen to him now?

You may not usually leave the state while under supervised probation without informing and obtaining your probation officer's approval. That means even temporarily. They must contact the state where you desire to relocate, and reach an agreement with their Probation and Parole Department to assume the relocating probationer. Most states will do this if it involves only a misdemeanor and the probationer has good cause for the move. For example, a good job or to attend an educational institution. To leave a state to simply vacation or visit a relative, you need to acquire a travel permit from the probation officer. It will specify dates and destinations of your trip and must be displayed to law enforcement upon any contact with them. Ordinarily, the Feds would never become involved unless the offense he was assigned probation for was federal in nature. The standard procedure for someone leaving unauthorized, like your brother obviously did, would be for his Probation Officer to file a probation violation report with the court, the court then sets a docket date to hear the matter. If he fails to appear at that hearing, a warrant will be issued for failure to appear. He basically stands the chance of being revoked and serving what ever sentence was suspended when he was approved for probation. It is not good that one of those offenses is bail jumping. He should immediately contact his probation officer and make arrangement to resolve his predicament. That could mean returning to the original jurisdiction or it could mean working out an alternative arrangement dependent on the specifics of his situation. Meaning, is he gainfully employed at his new location? People on the lam, can stay on the lam for an extended period of time. Were I you, I would advise him to do whatever is required to resolve the matter rather than running and absconding again. He won't receive compassionate treatment by repeating his previous offense, usually just the opposite will occur. He, in the courts eyes, has flouted the law, not just once, but twice.
