OSS Question?

I would like to know more about what the Office of Strategic Services did in the Second World War. Were they similar to the CIA, or special forces units of modern times, or did they do something totally different than elite units they influenced?

The OSS was originated by William Donovan and eventually became the CIA.
Prior to WW II intelligence was processed by each agency. The Army , Navy and other agencies had their own code breakers and spies. President Roosevelt felt the need to incorporate all these activities under one agency. This was more efficient, prevented wasteful duplication and allowed the focus and talent to be placed on the most important missions.
They were not like Special Forces or any other elite military unit. Their agents were often trained in various paramilitary skills but that training was usually for specific missions.
The CIA is contemplating the possibility of creating it's own special operations paramilitary team not unlike the Army's Delta Force.

The OSS performed many clandestine operations during the second world war. Intel gathering, sabotage, organizing and equipping many resistance groups. They were very similar to the current CIA and SOCOM units of today. In fact, the CIA is a direct descendant of the OSS.
