Do you have to be a state employee to handle USPS mail?

OK here's the deal- there is a local 'post office' here that is at the gas station. The kids they get to work there have no idea how to do the mail and I don't even think it's legit to have 'just anyone' handle the mail. They are always overcharging and they take forever. You can't get any sort of service from them because they don't even know how to do dc or insured mail!

Are the owners of this gas station making a killing from the state by claiming to be a post office or what? Aren't they required to have someone there that is a postal employee? It's irritating me. I would like to know what the legalities are on it but the usps website is impossible to navigate for me.

Anyone out there have an idea?

I have reported them. I reported them over a year ago now and just reported them again. Nothing comes of it. The last time I think they made a couple signs that explained how to do the mail for the kids that work there.

You are dealing with a CPU, Contract Postal Unit. The workers there are not required to be Postal Employees, they are employed by the contractor. Therefore, wemployment at the CPU is governed by the Labor Laws of your State.

USPS is not a State Agency, we are Federal.

You should make your complaint online at usps.com, or to the District Office for your area.

And, to the one that pops up once in a while espousing the privatization of the USPS, what you are reading here is the type of service you could expect. There is no single private company that could afford to "buy" USPS. It would be sold off piecemeal and you could end up with all of these little contractor units all over the place that UPS or FedEx doesn't want to deal with. Just not a good idea.

I'm almost 100% positive that is completely illegal as you have to be 18 to be a postal employee and you have to take a test and go through training. I'd turn them in and wouldn't be taking any of my mail there.

I _THINK_ that to handle U.S. mail other than the act of posting it or the recipient receiving it, the workers must be USPS employees.
Report 'em.
EDIT:
Postal Service workers must be at least 18 years old. They must be U.S. citizens or have been granted permanent resident-alien status in the United States, and males must have registered with the Selective Service upon reaching age 18.

All applicants must pass a written examination that measures speed and accuracy at checking names and numbers and the ability to memorize mail distribution procedures.

The USPS is one of the most wasteful arms of the Government. Until people wise up and demand it be privatized, we will suffer with the present system.

go to the usps office of inspector general you can tell of complaints there
