When President McCain is in office will he re-institute the draft?

He has pledged to keep us in Iraq defending our country for 100 years or as long as it takes. Will this bring back mandatory military service? I believe he should because a law should be forced making every young person to serve their country! What do you think?

I agree. Alot of the young people who support the war in Iraq, have never or think they will never have to wear the uniform. Alot of them would think differently if they were made to stand up and earn the freedoms that they seem to take for granted.

I disagree. We have been doing just fine with an all-volunteer force. Mr. McCain would not be able to start a draft, even if he wanted to.

Right now, in the US there are about 12 million people aged 18 to21. We do not need 12 million in the military, could not possibly afford it and would create all kinds of problems: draft dodging, AWOLs, malingerers, trouble makers.

McCain is a nice old man AND a 'conservative'! That's the problem. He's both old in years and in ideas. We should vote for him because he was a POW? Take a break! If he was a WW2 Japanese flyer who surrendered he'd have committed hari-kari in disgrace years ago. He wants to continue a losing war? At least his son is serving, but the sons of a lot of other 'conservatives' who are hot for this war are not and they won't.....other priorities doncha' know! Further, you can't maintain a forever war without raising taxes. As these two items are essential for a long, bloody and expensive war, and as McCain will never stand for a draft or a war tax, this guy is blowing smoke up the national anatomy. As I said, he's a nice old man who once served his country, but that was then and this is now and his presidency would serve nobody. This issue with the radicals of the muslim world has to be dealt with covertly and with the help of all the western powers as we would deal with any 'mafia' type organization....70 ton tanks roaming around Iraq and all the troopers in the world running up and down the mountains of Afghanistan simply won't cut it.
