Do I call Social Services at this point? |
I am in Real Estate and about a month ago closed on a home for an 80 year old widower. Over the closing process (a long one, 45 days) He befriended me and he would call me here and there @ my office. About a week ago he came in w/ a houseplant and told me to keep it, as it was "bugged" by the government. He called they next day complaining of shots fired that came through his window and hit his lamp. He bought a house in a gated retirement community. Today he has sat here with me almost all day (my office)...reading Real Esate manuals, and is now taping envelopes for me. I like him, he is great company. In the hours he has been here today he has told me about the shots fired, his house being bugged, people watching him on the roof, and a radon spray gun that someone put through his window to make water droplets on things so he sould see things that were invisible. He will catch himself sometimes not making sense and gets teared up. "Please don't send me to a home" was... something he said in a lucid moment. He has no family. He will know if social services pays him a visit it was me...and what if they deem him ok to live alone? He will feel like I betrayed him. He is here now, and I know he is safe...I worry about him at night. I have dealt w/ dementia & alzheimers and this is the onset here and it is coming quickly. He is a war veteran so that plus the dementia only adds to the paranoia. You can't care for this guy full time, so, hard as it is, I think informing social services is all you can do. I would tell them, however, that you would rather he was not put into a home, jsut had someone come visit a few days a week to check he was ok and talk to him or something (That's what they did for my great aunt, and it helped her loads, just a few hours a day three times a week) x I think you should call S.S. even though he'll know that it was you, you should do what would be good for him and he needs help Honestly, you sound like a saint. Bless you for looking out for this man. Unfortunately, I think it is time to call Social Services or someone in the medical field. Yeesh. It doesn't sound like he should be deemed fit to care for himself. Maybe you can anonymously report it??? as long as ur okay with him...let him babble on it sounds cute You know it is difficult, that sucks, even I feel bad for the poor fella, but what if it was your father, or someone else close. You need to follow your heart. If it WAS your father you would possibly let him live with you, but since it isn't, that wouldn't be an option, for me at least. It's best to avoid later possible devastating events. I think a home is where he should be, or maybe a nanny for him at home. Maybe you can find out who his doctor is and help him get to an appointment. Sounds like he needs a medication adjustment. |
