New job offer, but no insurance. What to do?

My daughter was offered a new job. It will pay 75-cents per hour more than her present job, with a raise likely after a 6-month review. She'll be working in a social-service-type facility as Office Manager. The director is a wonderful Mentor for my daughter and they have worked together before. The bookkeeper is very matter-of-fact, but a nice lady. The three counselors, who are not in the office a whole lot, have different, but engaging and caring personalities.

I worked in this office for 4 weeks as a fill-in position and loved being there. I think my daughter would be very happy there and would learn a great deal about social services. Some sort of a scholarship program would be available for her to return to school after a certain period of time. She would receive a number of sick and personal days, but the position offers no insurance.

Her present job offers insurance. She pays $20 weekly for it.

Anybody been in this situation? Suggestions? Financial pros/cons?

She lives with her boyfriend and has no children. She hadn't planned to leave her current job--been there 14 months--until she found something that paid more and offered health, dental, and visual insurance. Her current job can be stressful at times and she gets frustrated with fellow employees when they are lazy. But, she has a lot of "down-time" too and gets to "play" on the computer when she wants. So it's not a bad place for a 20 year old to work. There's not really any opportunity for advancement.

The new job would be in a totally female atmosphere. I doubt there would be advancement opportunity, but there would certainly be networking opportunity with other service organizations.

I think insurance should be available somewhere--we just have to start searching. And I think the learning opportunities and the "good feelings" of working with lesser privileged women would be so good for my daughter.

My family used to be in a position where we had to provide our own insurance. After doing much research, here's what I discovered:

An HMO plan is best for families with small children. Babies and small children are in the doctors office more often because of vaccinations. It is also best for people who are required to visit the doctor on a regular basis.

Pro: low office co-pays, and most procedures are covered 100%.
Con: you pay more monthly premiums, pay more for out-of-network doctors.

A PPO is best for people who don't have children or for families with older children. Once a child is fully vaccinated, they usually don't have to visit the doctor that often and most illnesses are usually taken care of at home. It is also best for people who only visit the doctor for their yearly physicals or only if they have a severe illness.

Pro: Lower monthly payments, can visit any doctor in or out of network.
Con: Higher office visit co-pay and other out of pocket costs.

If your daughter is happy with her current insurance company, have her check out what their premiums would be if she were to pay for them herself. She can also check out other companies to find lower rates as well. If she absolutely needs an HMO plan, then she will be paying more for her premiums than she already is. Possibly 2-3 times more. However, if she can go with a PPO plan, then she can pay around the same as she is now, give or take $10-20 bucks. Already, she's paying $100/month with her current employer.

Just so you know: right now, my husband is working for a company who pays 100% of his health care coverage for him, me and our daughters. We are all on an HMO plan. My son's father is paying for his insurance and he's on a PPO plan. Our office visits are $10; my son's office visits are $40.

i understand where your coming from, but unless shes on your insurance and she doesn't have to worry about it then sure take the job. She shouldn't be without insurance, bad things happen when you don't have it. I would tell her to keep looking for a job that has insurance. I left my previous job bascially because i needed insurance and i wouldn't be on my mom's for much longer. You do what you have to do to stay safe. i don't love my job i do now as much as being a Hair Stylist before, but hopefully one day, if i ever get married i can go back to that. RIght now, its about paying bills and keeping me healthy.

Tell her to do what makes her happy. Having a stressful job isn't healthy. She's just going to have to weight the pros and cons of each job and decide for herself.

Just remember that nothing is permanent and she can always change her mind when something better comes along.
