I would like to purchase a computer sytem for a new office. Three computers will be netowrked together?

I will need a router. There are certain requirements from the software for the hardware....do they mean all three computers or just the router to support the software. If there is a router to connect all three computers how do people in other offices get the internet wirelessly. Do we need a wireless router. AND what kind of computers Dell? Compaq? HP? and a service department not in India (are there any?) Thanks

Dell are ok.
If you think you might expand your network in the future then you need a server. This contains the software and the 3 PCs access the server. The server is also connected to the Internet with firewall.

Someone like HP would be OK and they can advise you about what you need and can supply it all.
I am not a fan of Dell equipment or their support and have had less than desirable experiences in the past with them in our company.

I'm going to suggest going w\ dell.

they're running a special on complete systems vostro or optiplex for $429-550 each w\ 19'' lcd... hard to go wrong with that.

With only a few users you don't need to worry about xp pro unless you will be on a domain.

HP's service department is in a country south of the Himalayas. Their computers are good, but their tech support would be better if they used Answers - I've seen better technical expertise here - from people who can't have graduated from high school - than I've gotten from HP Tech Support.

If you want internet connectivity, you'll need a router - whether you want to use wireless or not is your choice, but wired is faster (between computers - wireless is still far faster than your internet connection), more secure and easier to maintain. (Just look at all the "I get limited connectivity on wireless" questions here.) If all you want is to connect the computers to each other, all you need is a switch or hub, although you won't save much by not buying a router - maybe $25.

The company I work for and the company my wife works for both use Dell, and that's over 1,000 computers of all sizes total. No computer is going to be free from breakdowns, but these Dells seem to hold up pretty well. (Their tech support for our tech department is in the US, but I don't know whether that'll hold true for a customer that has only 3 computers. Call and ask.)

The "requirements from the software for the hardware" probably refer to minimum amount of memory, disk drive size, CPU type and speed, etc., not to the network. That's why networking is done in layers - the network is transparent to most software. But it might save you more than it costs to sit down with the people supplying your software and spec out a computer from the vendor of your choice. As far as routers, for a 3-computer network, I'd recommend Linksys. We use them for our small segments and have no problem with them. (I wouldn't use one for a segment with 100 computers on it, but I have 7 computers running on one at home, and the router is about the last think I have to think about - it just works.)

You might think about running the router (or hub) and the 3 computers on a UPS, though - if you get a power failure, at least everyone can save the current work and turn the computers off cleanly.

You might be better off hiring a company that does networking.

Most commonly sold wireless router comes with four networking ports (Ethernet) that you can connect up to four computers (PC's) using patch cables. They are often discounted at places like Staples, Office Depot and Circuit City. For examples, the
Linksys WRT54GS Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster is on sale this week at Office and Staples for about $55, and they list the wireless adapters that go with them to take advantage of the higher wireless speeds you can use to ship files between your PCs. A Wireless-N networks will let your wirelessly connected PCs in your office exchange files faster, but it is till going to be slower than connection throught the wired ports of the router.

With a wireless router like I listed, you can connect 4 PCs by wire and theorectically 250 more PCs, but things will slow down as the number of PCs connected increases.

Linksys is not the cheapest but they have the best support and is generally easy to use.

The device driver (software) needed to connect a PC to a router by wire is already installed with Windows (or any operating system you use). For wireless, you will have device drivers that comes on a CD with the wireless adapter They all comply with the necessary standards.

Lenovo uses US-based Help support, universally. So does Dell, although maybe not in all cases. Dell package different level of Tech Support with different lines of their laptops and desktops. You can upgrade for more money. You need to ask them which level Tech Support is done with US-based personnel.

Another thing to remember is that US-based means just that. It says nothing about whether you can understand them when they talk. There are Tech Support people from India working here on special work visa's. You can call their Tech Support first to check them out first.
