I received a bad conduct discharge 10 years ago...?

... and I'm looking for a job now. There are several positions available with the local post-office, but I'm concerned that my discharge disqualifies me from civil service employment. How true is this?

i retired from civil service 10 yrs ago,went to work right out of the army.the main thing with getting hired with them is don't hide any thing from them,i have seen people get hired that did prison time for grand theft.just don't lie to them.you will have to explain your charges,just tell them everything.good luck!

Who gave you the bad conduct discharge? If it was the military then you lose any hiring benefit (veteran's preference) that most government jobs have. Which would put you application below those with a veteran's preference.

If you got a discharge from a previous government job, a different agency may be reluctant to hire you. If it was a discharge from a private employer, it may not matter -- depends on the need to hire and the regulations for hiring.
