McCanns: YA Current Events - highly detrimental to the image of the McCanns and that of the British government

We read that a Home Office source has accused Clarence 'McLiar' Mitchell of calling upon his former service at the UK Governments Media Monitoring Unit to keep a watch not only on several journalists but also on the behaviour of participants in a list of forums and blogs considered to be 鈥渉ighly detrimental to the image of the McCanns and that of the British government鈥?

Will you join me, 'Pro', 'Anti' 'Neutrals' in condeming this kind of Big Brother circa 1984 sh*t from someone who is meant to be solely no more than a PR man for two people who are MAIN SUSPECTS in a foreign missing child investigation ?

I never thought I would see the day when I found some common ground with you on a McCann issue but I have to agree that this is fe*king out of order.
This type of action/censorship/oppression is reminiscent of communist Russia or Nazi Germany.

As you know I do not believe that the McCanns are in anyway, outside of stupidly and irresponsibly leaving Madeline un-supervised, connected with her abduction, but the actions of old Clarence do not help there case in anyway.

The problem is, that the Governments suddenly realised, at the time of the current Iraq War, that if they are telling porkies about something, you know, like an illegal war, then people within, or close to Government could, easily, use the internet to leak damaging material, in the old days, most leaks were controllable, somebody like Clarence would ring up editors with juicy snippets and promise exclusives in the future if they shopped the leaker. BUT, now, the leakers, can simply become, "Jimmy Slick" on a blogging site, or newsgroup discussion forum, and dump the news there.
So, many Governments have set up monitoring units, they also want to use them to change public perception of Government, hence the boiler house operations, run in tandem and staffed by keyboard monkeys who will simply flit from forum to forum, ID to ID pushing an idea or viewpoint.

SICK isn't it, but it IS happening, and he has misused it from the beginning with the Mc's.

No I am not with you. It is all very well to look at freedom of speech in wholly Black and White, however, like most things in life it is all shades of grey and alas many people abuse the privilege of free speech, this is how paedophilia sites, KKK recruitment, slanderous garbage, suicide sites, snuff movie sites exist, there is a need for moderation because not everyone plays fair or is a decent human. I am relieved that this step is being taken as I have seen people being cruel and perpetuating hatred here, and some are sheep like by nature and follow and so a current of cruelty spreads like an insidious cancer through society.

The COI (Central Office of Information's) Media Monitoring Unit (like all sorts of Government monitoring units - there are plenty of them) are there to protect the public and the Government - they have been monitoring blogs and conspiracy sites for months - this is not new.
They're doing their job plain and simple. Did you think we lived in a world without censorship?

I cant see anything wrong with the government and police/government intelligence organisations monitoring Internet activity, in fact i really hope that they do for the sake of national security anti terrorism activities and illegal activities..

However For Mr Mitchell and his pack of "barking up the wrong tree"dogs should not be allowed to do so.
