Should I risk my character for a job.. ??

I have a job working at a corporate tax preparation office and recently had a client who I thought was being charged too much for the services... upon bringing this up to my boss, he took the defensive and said prices are what they are and I need to present them as such.

I think this place is a rip-off and I don't want to be the one committing highway-robbery here... I want to put in resignation... any thoughts?

Serious thoughts and advice only please.

Thank you.

It takes 10 years to build a reputation and only 10 minutes to lose it. Do not make this exchange. It's a bad deal and I am sure there are much better companies that will appreciate knowledgeable and honest employee.

I would resign with no second thought, giving these exact reasons in writing, keeping the copy for myself.

If you really believe that the company is overcharging clients and that clients are not being treated well, then you need to start looking elsewhere for employment. You should not compromise your ethical or customer satisfaction standard for any reason. They are part of what makes you the person you are and you won't be happy if you do.

Good Luck on your job search.

Find a new job if you don't want that one..but I'd find a new job before I'd leave that one.

In this particular case, I'd side with the manager. Just charge the client what the prices are. You're not doing anything illegal or unethical. It's really up to the client to decide if the prices are too high.

I am like you and have a guilt conscious. I don't like seeing innocent person duped into paying more than they should or worse, duped into paying for something they don't need. I once had a door-to-door sales job signing person up to engery contracts. Although they don't pay you directly, you get a commission from the engergy company for ech person who signs up. The commission comes out of the monthly sercvice charge they customer pays on their bill. What bothered me about this job was that they told us to use these subliminal pushy tactics to get persons to sign up. Basically, you don't give them a choice, you trick them by NOT giving them a choice, just make them sign. The technique was fast and very slick. Most persons didn't realize what they just signed up for. I tried being honest, explaining everything, giving them the decision but 90% of the time they declined. They were going to fire me if I didn't start doing what they told me to do. So I quit. Some sales persons were making $120,000 a year doing this! But I had such an ethical issue. I don't manipulate persons.

In your case, it's the clients responsibility to check out the competition and who's charging what. If the client pays the bill, then you've done nothing wrong. You're not manipulating them.

think about these specific circumstances. Is it an isolated case or consistent, how do other companies compare for the same services? Keep in mind professional services are not cheap and most business customers would be comparison shopping before selecting your firm's services.

if there are specifics you can't agree with then yes its time to move on, but check around first then make a rational choice.

whoa that's a tough one -I think I would start looking for a new job. Good for you for having the integrity to bring this up to your boss. He should know if he loses you, you are going to talk - he may up your pay but don't allow that to happen. Your character is worth everything and is not for sale. good luck -I feel for you -I really really do. We need more honest people in this world and I admire you for your character.
