Should a prerequisite for Political Office be Military Service.?

I recall one of my teachers bringing this up back in the day after reading the Heinlen book, "Starship Troopers". And even if your everyday Congressman isn't isn't required to be in the military, at the least shouldn't a position such as the Secretary of Defense carry such a requirement......

Secretary of Defense, maybe.

After this administration, Common Sense, morals, real christian values, ethics, honesty, etc should be prerequisites.

I don't see why military service should be required instead of team sports or playing in an orchestra or teaching experience or a year as a trash collector.

I'd agree that those in charge of THE MILITARY should have military experience, but the Comptroller General? The Secretary of Education?

I would say no to your question. However, a position such as Sect. of Defense probably should.

The office such as Secretary of Defense, YES it should be restricted to someone who DOES have a military background. But most others no.

I don't know but maybe an IQ test at least.How about a no politician left behind, quarterly tests and if you fail you don't get paid.

I feel for a national level office, senator or congressperson that they should have some time in military service. Barring that they should have the decency to allow the people that have been trained to run the military to do as they have been trained to do. Historically when the elected officials start trying to run things the military ends up losing the war.

NO it should'nt be a prerequisite for a Political Office.....however the position for Secretary of Defense should, because thats what position is really comprimised of......military service as a prerequisite for political office is just something conservatives have made an issue, since their political strategy has always been to slander liberals and democrats as weak on defense.

Well lets look at it this way.
If hold that to be true Clintons shouldn't have been in the White House.
The DNC would still have a majority and we would have reasonable balance than name calling a nation for reasonable debate.

A lot can be said for being in the military and not.

I do remember a man who conducted interviews for job openings.

He said he knew with in the first 2 mins if that person was in the military.

Those who serve can understand what I am talking about and those how haven't will never understand.

It would be nice but we are now getting to an age that those who serve are getting rare.

It maybe good but as long as there is evil in the world we do need those S.O.B. to deal with them.

The following presidents did not have any military experience:

Adams
Jefferson
Quincy Adams
Lincoln
Wilson
FDR
Clinton.

Probably others who don't come immediately to mind.
Grant did have a military background, as did Taylor.

These positions are executive positions. The ability to properly analyze the advice of your more skilled subordinates is the real requirement.

With the complicated and sophisticated weapons systems in place now (many of them , surprisingly, funded by the Carter adminsistration) it's unlikely that any one person would understand them all.
